Broodmare Analysis of Comet Faerle, continued

The sire of the 1 st dam of Comet Faerle is  Hatchet Man . Hatchet Man was a roan colt foaled in 1971 by The Axe II out of Bebopper by Tom Fool.  At full height he stood 16.0 h.h.  Hatchet Man was unraced at two.  From 3 to 5 he started 32 times, winning 10 races of which 4 were stakes (Haskell-G1, Widener-G1, etc.).  He placed in 11 of his starts.  Hatchet Man's pedigree contains Equipoise 4x5 through a son and a daughter and Teddy 5x5 through a son and a daughter, also (Bull Dog and La Troienne).  I prefer inbreeding through sons and daughters to keep the potential for both colts and fillies as high as possible. Through 1998 he has been the sire of 19 crops and 34 SW's.  He has produced 495 foals; 81% runners (high); 60% winners; 15% 2yo winners (fairly high); and 7% SW's.  He has a positive AEI/CI ratio of 1.60/1.45 which means that he moved up his mares a considerable margin, but that the quality of his mares was by no means top-class.

In terms of nicking patterns, Hatchet Man as a sire (according to Nicks 98-99) has done well with dams by: Ambehaving, Apalachee, Bold And Brave, Crozier, Groton, His Majesty, In Reality, Lt. Stevens, Mr. Leader, No Robbery, Olden Times, Princequillo, Quack, Quid Pro Quo, Round Table, Stage Door Johnny, Swaps, Tell, and T.V. Commercial.

Hatchet Man has not done well with dams by: Advocator (note he is a son of Round Table who was a superior nick), Bagdad, or Bold Bidder.

As a broodmare sire (according to Nicks 98-99), Hatchet Man has an AEI/CI ratio is 1.56/1.71 with 4% SW's; 72% runners; 48% winners and 14% 2yo winners.  The AWD of the foals from Hatchet Man mares is 7.04 furlongs.  It is interesting to note that his mares have done well as broodmares to a wide range of stallions as evidenced by the 1.71 CI values when he was originally bred to mares of an average of 1.45 CI value.

Hatchet Man mares (according to Nicks 98-99) have gone best with the following sires: Alydar, Best Turn, Demons Begone, Distinctive Pro, Doonesbury, Fiery Best, Moment Of Hope, Peteroff, Salt Lake, Secret Claim, Slew City Slew, Slew The Knight, Slewpy, and Zupardo's Prince.

Hatchet Man mares ( Nicks 98-99) has not gone well with the following sires: Beirut, Cannonade, Dance Centre, and Rajab.

Cloud Castle was a filly foaled in 1972.  She was placed in her only start at two and won her only other start as a 3yo. Her SPR is an excellent 95.  SPR is a method of determining how much a horse earns on the track, compared to other thoroughbreds that were of the same sex, age and years raced.   This means she earned as much per start or more than 95% of the runners of her age, sex and years raced.   It also means that only 5% of thoroughbreds achieved better on the racetrack.   My standard for the SPR is about 83 (correlates to a SSI of about 1.50).   A SPR of 80 is needed to simply pay the training bills at major tracks.

As a broodmare, Cloud Castle was a very good producer.  From her 15 foals, she produced two SW's, five good winners (two were stakeplaced), 3 poor winners, 1 placed runner, 2 unplaced runners, and 2 unraced foals.  I like the fact that Cloud Castle produced her latest foal at age 23.  Cloud Castle was a full sister to Zenda who produced one SW and one SP'd runner and the excellent sire, Ruritania (see previous comments).

Faerie produced 10 foals, 6 of which are fillies   I do not think she has been bred appropriately, considering her classic diagram .   Faerie was mated to sires like In Reality, Sir Ivor, both sires who do not nick well with Graustark.  In addition, there are a couple of foals by Fred Astaire who is also not a good nick to this immediate family, but one which earned good blacktype.  Despite this fact, I would classify three of her foals as good runners.  There is good reason to believe that her fillies will continue to add blacktype to the catalogue page, although two have been sent to Venezuela.

The sire of Comet Faerle is  Comet Shine .  Comet Shine is not old enough to have an established nicking pattern.  As a son of Fappiano he most likely will produce better North American-type turf runners, but there is an interesting mix of blood (Stage Door Johnny, Vice Regent, Aureole, etc.), which means the mares' family might play a large part in which surface the foal prefers.

This method of looking at the fashionability of Comet Faerle indicates that she is fashionable, especially in the 3 rd and 4 th generations.  If mated to a fashionable stallion the diagram of the foal will be even more fashionable than his dam.

This method of looking at the distance orientation of Comet Faerle indicates that she is very stamina-oriented.  There are six chefs de race within four generations that are stamina influences.  This is very, very rare in North America and should improve the chances of her producing Classic type foals.  I believe to maximize her performance that you seek out a stallion who is loaded with Versatile speed to give the foal enough speed to win quality races in quality times

The dosage diagram, according to my lists of chefs de race for Comet Faerle is 2-14-20-2-0, which results in a DI=2.17 and a CD of 0.42.  This translates to a best distance of about a mile and a quarter.  She has 38 Dosage Points, which confirms her fashionable status.
