Measurement of a Stallion's Book [MSB]
First, there was my GRASP program.  It was designed to accurately assess what was under-the-hood of a thoroughbred'.  My GRASP program is the result of over 30 years of pedigree analysis research.  GRASP was developed as a tool to help breeders and owners.  GRASP stands for (G)enetics, (R)acing (A)bility and (S)tud (P)erformance.

Second, I used my GRASP program to generate the GSV (Genetic Strength Value).  The GSV measures the hypothetical genetic strength of a thoroughbred.  The GRASP program generates what is and the GSV generates what might be.  The GSV has both application in breeding and betting.  It is very useful to breeders in predicting the potential of the foals they breed.  It is especially useful to handicappers in predicting the racing ability of thoroughbreds in Maiden Special Weight and Graded Stakes.

Third, Using the GSV scores I generated when producing my GSV race cards for North America, I have now developed a new means for measuring the book of a stallion.  For all runners of a stallion, I have computed an average Dam GSV score.  Since only the dam's half of the pedigree is used, the score will reflect the book of a stallion as expressed in a GSV score. I call this my MSB score or Measurement of a Stallion Book. This can be a potential new tool for breeders and buyers of thoroughbreds.  The higher the MSB score of a stallion, the higher the quality of mares to whom he has produced a foal to race.

My GSV race card databank numbers over 41,000 runners racing in 2008-2009 in North America.  I consider the MSB score to be more reliable if the stallion has 10 or more foals in the databank.
There are 3631 sires in the MSB databank, but only 1/3 of the sires had that many foals racing.  I have generated a MSB excel file and posted it on my web page.  It can be downloaded here

It is important to remember that the MSB score is derived only from the dam's half of the pedigree.  For example, Ghostzapper is by Awesome Again out of Baby Zip.  The MSB score measures only the half of the pedigree of Baby Zip.  The excel file is divided into stallions that have 10 runners in the databank and those that do not.  Both halves are in alphabetical order so that one can use the "FIND" function of excel to quickly find a stallion.  There are also sires in the databank that were grandfathered into the databank to see if the mares that produced their best foals had high GSV scores.  For example, Man O'War is the sire of 4 foals in the databank [War Admiral, etc.].

I have added the average GSV score of each stallion's progeny to that MSB excel file in another column.  Since the GSV is the average of the stallion's GSV and the dam's GSV score of a foal, the GSV score represents both halves of the pedigree [as opposed to only the bottom half of the pedigree with the MSB].   I am including the stallion's average GSV score in the excel file because the GSV of the sire can be so high that many breeders not fully fluent with the GSV will misinterpret the GSV score.  For example, if a thoroughbred has a GSV of 70.00 that sounds great.  But what if the sire brought in a GSV of 80.00.  This means that the Dam GSV average was only 60 [(80+60)/2].  Not quite so impressive!

If the sire's average GSV score is a lot higher than its MSB score, then either the sire has been bred to a poor book of mares or the sire's GSV score is so high that it would be impossible to have a book of mares that would be close to the sire's average GSV.  For example, A.P. Indy has a sire average GSV score of 77.50 and his MSB score of 74.24.  A.P. Indy brings GSV score of 80.75 to his progeny.  Only a truly good stallion could attract a book of mares with a MSB score of 74.24  [(80.74 +74.24)/2=77.50].

Conversely, Yes It's True's average sire GSV at 63.91 is lower than its MSB score of 64.97.  This means that the sire has either been bred to a higher quality of mare's than he brings into the pedigree himself or his own GSV score is so low that it is not hard for him to attract a book of mares with a higher GSV average than his own GSV score.   Yes It's True has done so well at stud, that it is entirely reasonable that he is attracting mares with higher GSV scores than himself.
