![]() The flute is a beautiful and rewarding instrument to play. It is one of the most versatile orchestral instruments, capable of producing a vast palette of expressive colours, given the right tools. That's where I come in! As an experienced teacher I can guide the student's practise to develop the ability to play the instrument with ease. My philosophy as a teacher is just this - to guide the student's development as a player so that he or she will possess the skills to be able to create music through the flute. By being flexible in my own teaching techniques, I am able to assess the student's response to various learning methods and to teach each student in such a way as to enable him or her to develop resources - both technical and creative - which will enable him or her to "think musically" and indeed, become a musician. My teaching experience goes back twelve years. I began to teach in high school, helping younger students. I taught privately throughout my university career and have taught flute full-time, maintaining a studio of around 30 students for the last five years. In addition to my own private students, I teach through two schools in the Vancouver area, West Point Grey Academy and The Arts Connection in Steveston. I accept students of all levels. I offer to the flute student not only my skills as a flute player and teacher, but also my enthusiasm for music and for helping others to reach their musical goals. Flute lessons in my studio will cover all areas of playing: tone (the quality of the sound which you create), technique (the physical skills which you must acquire in order to have ease of expression) and of course, musical repertoire. I also teach music theory, either as a part of flute lessons or as a separate course. While teaching all of these elements in balance, I am flexible in designing a program that will suit each individual student's needs and goals.
