Music has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. I began learning piano at the age of 5 and flute at 10. I remember my first music festival experience; I was signed up for 2 classes on consecutive days. The first day, I was very nervous, but by the end of the performance had decided that it was the most fun I'd ever had. The next day, I won my class! All through my school career I was very involved in the music programs: recorder ensembles, bands, school musicals, and in high school I was often called on to teach the younger students. Following high school I studied music in university. I graduated from UBC School of Music in 1997 with a Bachelor of Music degree. In addition to my studies there, I have also participated in many other programs with teachers such as William Bennett, Robert Cram and Peter Lloyd. I continue my flute studies with Vancouver teacher Sarah Jackson and Lorna McGhee. My performing experience includes solo, chamber and orchestral idioms. I am involved in several small ensembles which are busy performing around Vancouver, and I play piccolo with a few orchestras in the Vancouver area including the West Coast Symphony, the Fraser Valley Symphony and the Burnaby Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist, I often produce full-length recitals, either alone or in collaboration with other musicians. I also maintain a studio of around 30 private students, which I enjoy immensely.
Outside the realm of classical music, I thoroughly enjoy (and am constantly developing my skill in) improvisational genres. I play some jazz piano and flute, and love to play around and along with any group of musicians who will have me! |
