Entrance to Badakhshan, |

Badakhshan province is located in the northeast corner of Afghanistan. To gain entry to this province we travelled over passes amongst some of the most beautfiul mountains in the world at altitudes exceeding 18000 ft. Taking a caravan of 200 mujahedin with horses , donkeys and medical equipment was extremely tiring for both the people and animals. The Afghans themselves were elated to reach this particular point as they believed it was here that Afghanistan truly began. I painted this in memory of the incredible beauty of the Hindu Kush Mountains. Because these mountains do not allow people to live on them or give them sustenance, they are not considered "beautiful" by the local people. |
