Subject: Question for Rivers

Rivers (c/o Karl):

I'm wondering that although I understand your desire to not allow the songwriting to be emotional or personal, why have you been currently writing in such a generic almost improvised on the spot lyrics. For example, i don't see a song like Surf Wax America to be either emotional or personal, yet I at least get a sense the song is about something. The new songs lyrically just seem like empty words hastily contrived together. A song about, say, toasters would be neither personal nor emotional (probably), but at least we get a sense that it's about something. That's not really a good example, but i think you know what I mean.

thanks,

xxx

-----Original Message-----

Dear Mr. xxx,

I've been trying to write songs that just come out spontaneously, with out my willing or directing them.Ý I'm generally surprised to find that, over time, the lyrics end up evolving to be "about something" just naturally, without my ever having intended it.Ý Do you not see any meaning in the lyrics to the Green songs?Ý (You would not be alone if you didn't!)Ý In any case, it's clear to me that many listeners would prefer if I actually sat down to write "about something".Ý I hope my experiments over the past few years haven't been a complete waste of time, but please don't spare my feelings if that's the case.

Sincerely,

Rivers Cuomo
