A note from the Ponoka GenWeb Project:
Rather than rewrite the history of the County of Ponoka, a series of articles, many taken from local history books, and written by pioneers or their descendants, is being currently being collected and will be presented below when available.

Appropriately, credit is given to the authors and publications, and a bibliography can be found by following the links in each article.

Note: If an article was edited in any way, the term "Excerpt (modified )..." is used. - D.Owens

By charter, the Hudson's Bay Company received 1/20 of Rupert's Land (Western Canada). the Canadian Pacific Railway was given every odd numbered section (except Sections 11 and 29 which were set aside for school lands) in certain townships and in certain regions extra portions - all land extending some twenty miles on either side of the railway right-of-way. Besides land set aside as Indian reserves, eighty acre Script Deeds were granted to Metis (half breds) who provided some service to the crown (e.g. as interpreters, etc) or stayed out of the Riel rebellion. Veterans of the Boer War could apply for Script too.

The Government of Canada made crown homesteads available, 160 acres for $10.00 if the applicant lived on the land for six months of each year, and met regulations about clearing, breaking, building and fencing. Title could be received in three years; some never got theirs for twenty years, often due to poor weather conditions and crops and a shortage of funds with which to make improvements
