The ScreenSavers - on TechTV
The ScreenSavers is a web site for the television program on the TechTV cable station. we would critique this as a computer show combining "Tool Time" for its fun factor and "This Old House" for its practical applications for your computer. It's shot live for an hour an a half most weekdays and covers issues that concern computer users today. Questions are taken from callers and web camera questions and guests are actually preffered. There is a download of the day, quote of the day, news, boot camp (tips and tricks training), site of the night, a twisted list, and polls. The web site covers most topics that are seen on the show, and is updated frequently. TechTV was created by Ziff-Davis which is the largest technology and Internet magazine publisher and the sixth largest magazine publisher in the United States. TechTV is now owned by the co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen. As you would expect from a trade magazine publication they appear to have unbiased opinions and comparisons regarding the products that they feature. When ordering TechTV, be prepared to take the good with the bad, since you'll also get the disappointing shows which were chosen to provide the CRTC regulated Canadian content. If you don't get the channel, then check out the web site, you'll be glad you did.

Network Information
Find someones DNS name or IP Address by using this web based tool. It's a non-intrusive way to find out this information, since the information is extracted from the DNS lookup files that propegate through the internet that allow people to surf the web using urls. For example when you type in www.microsoft.com into a web browser, the request to find the web page is sent to a computer known as a DNS server supplied by your internet service provider. The DNS server knows that 207.46.197.102 is the IP address for www.microsoft.com. Try typing 207.46.197.102 into your web browser, and you'll get Microsoft's home page, this is the direct method of finding their site, and it will bypass your DNS server. During a "Denial of Service" attack on a web site, users typing in the url into their web browser will get page not found errors, but those using the site's IP address would get through, because this hacker method targets the DNS servers flooding it with requests for url translations. Most software utilities designed to give you the results of DNS name or IP address translations, will actually poll the actual computer for the information. As a result, if the they are monitoring their computer using a firewall, they will know your checking them out. Also the firewall may prevent you from getting the information your requesting. To the software it will appear as the DNS name or IP address is is not found. Using this web based utility will give you the officially registered translation, but it will reference it from the list that circulates to all the internet service provider's DNS servers.
