ELLIS
My
Grandmother, Eliza Ellis (b.1883) left Worksop, Nottinghamshire,
in 1912 to emigrate to Toronto, Ontario as a children's
"nanny". She married Frederick Glendinning in
1913 in Medicine Hat, Alberta and then moved to Victoria BC.
Most of
her family remained in Britain including parents Eliza Webster
(b.1852) and Frederick Ellis (b.1848) and siblings William, Mary
Ann (Polly), James, Matilda, Annie, Arnold, Frederick, Harriet
(Rita), Delia, Wilfred and Egbert. Frederick Sr. was
the son of Henry Ellis and Mary Whitfield
Bright (from
Killamarsh DBY) and Eliza's parents were William Webster and Ann
McCann. The Websters
came from Whitwell, and the McCann family
had both Worksop and Sheffield YRK connections. Her grandparents
included the Smith family from Blyton Lincolnshire, and the
Pettinger family from Hayton/Clarborough, Nottinghamshire. The
Smith family is still to be researched, but my
most sincere thanks to Simon Pettinger for his patience and
efforts in confirming that the Ellis family do have a drop of
Pettinger
blood and for allowing me to post the results of his research.
The
Worksop Ellis's are a very large family and the database is
growing rapidly, thanks to the detective work of
"cousins" Joan Brown and Brian Dennis. If you are
visiting the Heart of England, do consider staying at Joan's
award-winning bed and breakfast: "The Old Orchard
Cottage" at Welbeck, the estate of the Dukes of Portland.
