Brickmaker & farmer In 1872 James, aged 17, was living at Clunes with his parents and siblings. R. P. Falla's publication, 'The Selectors in the Parish of Charlton West', shows that James (a brickmaker living in Charlton East) pegged out a 206 acre block of land in West Charlton on 25 August 1873 and was granted a licence for the land on 10 February 1874 (allottment 34 was located west of Charlton on the Wooroonook Road). In its 26 October 1881 edition, the East Charlton Tribune reported that 'on Saturday last Mr James Hickmott's cottage, together with over a rood of land situated at Clifton Hill, West Charlton, was submitted to public competition by [Charlton's auctioneer] Mr James Tait. The bidding was spirited, and the property was run up to 101pounds, at which very respectable figure it was knocked down to Mr P. Quirk, who has thus increased possessions on the west side of the river. We hear that it is not unlikely that Mr Quirk will shortly retire from public business, in which case he will probably reside in the cottage he has just purchased on the pretty hill which runs through West Charlton. The household furniture, which was sold at the same sale by Mr Jas H. Penberthy, went at satisfactory rates.' On 25 March 1885 the same newspaper reported that James was having built on Camp St in Charlton, in the rear of Foreman's Mill, a brick house comprising 'four rooms varying in size from 13ft by 12 ft to 12ft by 9ft' (his half brother, Henry Edward, was having another house built in the same street. It seems that James and Henry were in business together as brickmakers and contractors since the 'dissolution of their partnership' (by mutual consent) was announced in the East Charlton Tribune on 3 November 1888. In May the previous year James' transferred the title of his 206 acre allottment to a James Bennett (who owned an adjoining block). Following the birth of their last child, Albert Samuel Hickmott, in 1887/88, James and Fanny and their family left Charlton for Kookyne (north of Kalgoorlie) in Western Australia. James died of prostate cancer in Perth in 1935. His death certificate states that he had been in Western Australia for 38 years. It also confirms that he and Fanny had five children. His issue living at the time of death were: William Ernest (52 years) and Emily Louisa (48). Deceased issue were 2 males and one female.
