From a column in the Nelson Evening Mail of November 22, 1876
The case of Brown vs Brown and Blowes alias Simeon Fuller was heard today. Mr Pitt appeared for the petitioner who married his wife in Auckland. Finding her one day sitting on the knee of the co-respondent, she left him, taking her infant child with her, and went to live with Fuller. He (petitioner) shortly after went to live in Nelson, where he practised as a photographer in 1865. There was no Divorce Court then, and when one was established, his business was so precarious that he had not the means to sue for divorce, though he had in the meantime ascertained that his wife was living as a prostitute. Witness adduced evidence to satisfy the Bench that he took proceedings as soon as his circumstances warranted. Wm. Purdy, of Auckland, testified to Mrs Brown being at a house of ill fame. Detective Jeffrey said he knew Blowes' proper name to be Fuller. The Bench considered the petitioner had proved his case, and granted a decree nisi upon the usual terms.

Divorce Court Proceedings
Brown vs Brown
Mr Pill appeared for the petitioner, William Edmund Brown, who had been married in Auckland and who now lives in Nelson, carrying on the business of photographer. He had personally discovered wrongful conduct on the part of his wife in 1865. On that occasion she had assaulted him with a pair of scissors and failing to find sureties to keep the peace, underwent 3 months imprisonment. She afterwards lived in Auckland with co-respondent known as Simeon Fuller or George Blowes and then followed a disreputable life on the West Coast. He had been unable until know to take proceedings. Was a well known Photographer in Nelson NZ in period of 1865 - 1890's. Some of his early portraits are displayed in the Nelson Museum. They have 6,000 of his negatives/photographs.
Married in Auckland shortly after arriving in New Zealand in January 1862. Found wife in compromising circumstances on Saturday 15 April 1865 and when she attacked him, she was arrested and jailed. He left for Nelson to establish a photography studio later in 1865. He was unable to file for divorce until 1876 due to financial concerns and also as there was no divorce court established. Granted divorce decree nisi 22nd November 1876. Married Frances Wimsett in a civil ceremony on 8th June 1877 in Nelson. Later he purchased land and established a sheep station on the Tasman to the west of Nelson.
1884 Electoral Role - occupation photographer, Nelson Electorate

From the Nelson Provincial Museum - the following information:
William Edmond Brown (c1840-1922) : carte de visite, promenades, cabinet, Victoria and Imperial
Brown moved from Auckland in 1865 to start a business in Trafalgar Street. He later moved to Hardy Street.
Brown specialised in studio portraits (around 6,000 of these were taken during 1865-1892), including the cheap and very popular carte de visite (a photographic calling card).
He also took scenic and event photographs including Nelson Provincial Museum's earliest image of an immigrant ship, the Adamant in1874, showing fifty immigrants on deck.
An excellent record keeper and portrait specialist Brown is the only early Nelson photographer who consistently recorded client and date details, making positive identification possible.
