In the Electoral roles in 1911 he was residing in Te Puke as a 'ganger' - railway. In the 1914 roles he is still in Te Puke as 'ganger'. In 1919 he and Amelia are living at 28 New Bond Street, Grey Lynn, Auckland with his occupation as 'retired'.
He died in Auckland and a the time he made his last Will in 1929 stated that he was a retired Public Works Official.
Sometime between 1899 and 'retirement' he worked in railway bridge construction.

Died at a young age in 1885 as a result of blood poisoning after he cut his hand when the glass top of a coffin broke! Official death notice stated it was from congestion of lungs and enteritis.
The Yeoman May 30 1885 stated Mr. Riley, an undertaker, of Bulls, died this morning through inhaling the effluvia from the corpse of a Parawanui Chief Kawana Hunia, while placing him in the coffin last Tuesday. Wanganui Chronicle June 2 1885 stated The closing scene in a most almentable affair took place at Bulls on Sunday, in the burial of Mr. Riley, undertaker, of Bulls and a member of the Masonic fraternity, who testified their regard by attending in large numbers at his funeral. The deceased met his death under most unfortunate circumstances, having contracted a severe attack of blood poisoning through handling the body of the late Maori chief, Kawana Hunia.

Joseph Henry RILEY was born in 1857 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. He died of pulmonary tuberculosis on 6 February 1910 in Porirua Hospital, Wellington, NZ. Little is known of Joseph. It is most likely that he came out to New Zealand on a ship around the same time his brothers, sisters and mother came. This would be during the years 1878 -1880, however I have not been able to find which ship. A Joseph Henry Riley was admitted to the Porirua Hospital by two doctors with a mental disorder from Bulls in 1900. He remained in the hospital until 1910 when he succumbed to TB. The biggest problem is that at the time of death it is stated he was 43. This date is correct if it is the date on his admission, but he should have been 53 at time of death. Was this a clerical error or is this not the correct Joseph Henry Riley? Coming from Bulls where the rest of the family eventually settled it is most likely the correct person - how many other Joseph Henry Riley's would have been living there?
