Final Assessment for the China Unit

For the final assessment of this unit, the students will be engaged in an authentic testing experience. The assessment will be in the form of a performance based evaluation where the students will answer questions about China in a context and their performance will be videotaped and assessed in accordance to the correctness of their response and their level of thinking. The students will be told about this assessment at the beginning of the unit and will be given the assignment and a list of sample questions to study. The actual interview questions will come from the list and will be different for each student to ensure there is no cheating. Like a unit test, the students will be told what day their assessment will occur and will be given sufficient time to prepare themselves for the test.

An ongoing assessment will also occur throughout the eight week unit in the form of a learning log. The students will be given the opportunity to reflect on their learning and connect ideas together. This will also be handed in for evaluation. The students will be assessed on their level of thinking, formulating questions and ideas, and their understandings of the China unit and the topics being taught. The students will be told at the beginning of the unit that they will hand in their learning logs periodically throughout the unit for informal assessment. The learning logs will be given a basic mark if all the entries are completed and will be evaluated by a checklist. However, the main purpose for the learning logs is to obtain specific evidence of student learning and critical thinking.
