Expert Group Lesson Plan #1 by Melissa Mo

Objectives:
* The students will compare and contrast the way people in Canada and
China meet their basic needs.
* The student will analyze how traditions and customs in China influence
the way the people meet their basic needs, by identifying and describing
the values held.
* The students will analyze the effect of communication and technology
on the way the Chinese meet their basic needs.
* The students will collect and organize information on a clearly defined
topic, using a simple outline, such as webbing.
* The students will contribute to the various functions of group work as a
recorder, spokesperson, and leader.
* The students will distinguish between work that can be done most
effectively by individuals and that which calls for group effort.
* The students will be encouraged to develop respect and appreciation for
the way in which people in China satisfy basic needs.
* The students will take notes in point form collected from various
sources.
Anticipatory set:
Show students an example of a PowerPoint presentation of China from a website (http://www.noelani.k12.hi.us/a7.pp/anc.china.htm) and inform the students that this is what they will be doing only they are going to have specific topics on China, such as food, housing, clothing, values and communication and technology.
Materials:
Overhead projector, computer, power point instructions, paper and pencils, access to the internet, library, and other multi media resources
Procedure:
First I will inform the students that they will be learning about China and today they will be split into groups randomly where they pick their topics out of a hat (five groups assuming that the class has 30 students) and are responsible for researching the given topics and are expected to be able to teach other students in the class what we they have learned through a power point presentation!
Group one will compare and contrast food (for example, basic food, food used for celebrations, for worship, utensils, and table manners). Group two will compare and contrast housing and transportation (for example, cost of living and transportation, housing structure, the use of certain materials to build their homes adjusting for climate, population density and distribution in terms of urban and rural areas). Group three will compare and contrast clothing (for example, traditional dress, women, men and children, special occasions, modern fashion, and costs). Group four will identify and describe Chinese values such as traditions and customs, religion, women rights in the past and present, political ideology which is communism and language). Group five will identify how communication and technology effect the way people in China meet their needs (for example, education (compare past and present), past military technology (they invented gun powder) versus modern military technology, telecommunication, and the use of internet.
Students in each group need to distribute the workload among their group members themselves. Perhaps it would be effective to select a group leader and assign different roles. They need to learn to allocate the duties fairly so that everyone is making a contribution. To ensure this, the students will be doing a group evaluation which involves a self monitoring section. They also need to make a plan to ensure that they can finish everything in two weeks. Therefore students need to make a web.
The teacher will inform the students that they will have the opportunity to do research for their topics throughout the week in the library and will encourage them to surf the internet at home. The teacher will also help them with their research and provide each group with some information on their topic. After their webs are done use an LCD projector to teach the students how to make a power point presentation by doing the tutorial provided on the website, http://www.science.iupui.edu/SAC98/ppt.htm. Students are to take notes and ask questions throughout the tutorial.
Closure:
At the end of the tutorial, the teacher will use guided practice with the students to apply the skills learned in this lesson. Together, they will create a power point presentation example with the teacher guiding the mouse and the students instructing what to do next. The teacher will ask challenging questions and include all students when trying to get answers. The teacher will not provide any answers. Therefore students need to help each other to answer the questions.
Assessment:
Students will be assessed informally through the guided practice. The teacher will observe the students and ask each of the students a question to check for understanding. The teacher will provide a handout of the PowerPoint tutorial.
Modifications:
Special Needs students can participate fully in this lesson since it is mainly teacher directed and visual. These students will be included in the group work, but will have a specific role. They will be in charge of a small topic and will have guidance from the teacher and other students in doing research and writing.
