According to family documents, when Margaret was in her mid teens her mother became the wife of John Allen. John was the son of Isaac Allen a lawyer-turned-soldier in support of the British before and during the American Revolution. After the Revolution, Isaac, as did many other United Empire Loyalists, emigrated from the U.S. and settled in New Brunswick. It's unclear whether Agnes Blair was John Allen's first, second or third wife but what is known is that one of the other wives was named Sarah Campbell. Again, it is unknown how many children John Allen may have fathered but he and Sarah Campbell had at least one son who was named John Campbell Allen. This John Campbell Allen later became the Chief Justice of New Brunswick and is referred to in family documents as Margaret's half brother. As the son of her step-father he would, in fact, be her step-brother. Again, according to the family documents, when Agnes (Blair) Curtis married John Allen Sr, 17 year-old Margaret ran away, turned Catholic and married Allen McDonald. As of early 2011 I have discovered that Margaret was indeed Baptized as Catholic at age 18 and married Allen McDonald two days later. Margaret left an upwardly mobile, aristocratic, wealthy family and made her life with a fiddle-playing wheelright in the Brae. Allen and Margaret McDonald prospered in their own right and, in fact, donated the land for the Brae RC Church and final resting place of many of our ancestors.
