Jessie Taylor Dodd
Victoria . BC
Jessie Taylor Dodd spent the first part of her life in Vancouver BC where she was born. Over many years she managed to spend parts of her life in Germany, Denmark, France, St. Thomas USVI, Barriere, Nelson and eventually settled in Victoria.
Always interested in art, Jessie ventured as far from it as she could as a stockbroker. Finally realizing art was who she was, she attended the Victoria College of Art where she grew interests in drawing and especially painting.
Textiles, sewing, embroidery, needlepoint batik and dying were taught to her as a child by her aunt in Denmark as that was what a “good” woman does. Much later, in art school she would learn to derive references from these various textile methods learned as a child and infuse all aspects of art with these approaches.
Jessie views her art making whether painting of surface design of textiles- as a stage for nothing other than pleasing arrangements of shapes, line and colours. To be first and foremost, visually interesting statements. The combination of lyrical and rhythmic movements with overlays of geometric forms, seek to achieve little shifts in time. She uses the picture plane not as a place to locate narratives, more like the postmodernists who have rehabilitated the idea of decoration for the sake of beauty itself.
