MUSICAL ENRICHMENT CLASSES Jean Lyons School of Music conducts enrichment classes to enhance the musical knowledge of pupils and thereby create companionship in these efforts. PIANO PLAY, for ages 5 to 8 at all levels, takes place on alternate Saturdays with Holly Duff. Activities focus on developing the musical ear, sight-reading, and improvisation through a series of games in a fun and encouraging environment. In addition to the piano, students will explore various rhythm instruments. Always a popular class, Piano Play nurtures children's musical enthusiasm while exposing them to the wider contexts of music and musicianship.
STUDIO CLUB is designed for Piano Play ‘graduates’ and all students aged 9 to 11. Students will benefit from enriching and enjoyable musical activities to develop musicianship and cultural awareness. The class is conducted as a ‘club’ with a President, Vice-President, and Secretary elected by the students. Holly Duff directs the class and encourages leadership skills and team-building challenges.
PRIVATE ENSEMBLE COACHING is a class for students of all ages who have reached the minimum level of RCM Grade 4. Students will be placed with a partner of the same level, and will be coached by a teacher. The goal will be either to perform in recitals and competitions (weekly lessons), or simply to enjoy music-making with friends (bi-weekly lessons). MASTERCLASSES will be offered by Alan Crane on Saturdays,
November 28 and December 5, and by Gaye Alcott on Sunday, May
30. The purpose of these classes is for students to receive extra input
SCHOOL CONTESTS - The School arranges special contests from time to time. For our most recent Composition Contest, Canadian Composer Lorna Paterson was the judge. She assessed students' works and provided invaluable instruction and suggestions for improvement. We also schedule 'Fun Contests' such as "O Canada" , "Happy Birthday" and "The Wedding March" to prepare students to entertain their family and friends at social events. Our "Musical Fitness" Contests prepare students for the technical aspects of examinations, and serve as our own form of musical participaction. Stay tuned for upcoming school contests or check our Calendar of Events!
