This is the Half-BrotherAfter the success of Hy Clown I was inspired to use it for some subsequent crosses. The other parent in this case was Trengrove Jill, B size Formal Dec, which I had just imported from the UK the year before. It had impressed me with its high bloom count and lovely pure amber color. Only one of 7 seedlings had the quality I was after, and this one had my eye from the very first week out of its seed! The cotyledons emerged with a conspicuous, darker green color and then when the tiny stalk began to grow, I noticed that there were many transparent hairs on it, like frosting. This latter characteristic kept my interest and is still very evident. In fact, I had planned to call the variety Hy Hairy, but who would buy a name like that! It has been sent to trial garden and, all going well, I hope to release it at Ferncliff next year.
