I came on the Beaverbrae in July 1950 with my mother. I was then 13years old. I was born in Canada in 1937 and in 1939 went for a visit with my mother to Germany and got stranded for all those 11 years. It was on the Beaverbrae that I saw my first banana and didn't know how to eat it. My recollection is that we went north of Scotland. We landed in Montreal where I very much admired the hairstyle of one of the intake officers, who had a black braid around her head. I always wanted to be an interpreter because of her. Didn't happen. I am wondering if there is anyone out there with a picture of the Beaverbrae? I would love to buy a postcard or a picture etc. I have my mother's immigration ticket but nothing else of my parents trip on the Beaverbrae. They departed January 26th 1953 when my mother was 5 months pregnant with me. Settled in Lethbridge, Alberta Would love to hear from anyone who might have travelled with them (Fabian and Agnes Schrage). ellenschoen@shaw.ca

I love your guest book, Heike! I am looking into my families emmigration to Canada on the Beaverbrae in January of 1953. Your website is my first glimmer of hope that I might actually find something. Thank you so much! Ellen

Amazing how many people are surfing the net looking for the Beaverbrae. I arrived in NB on December 24, 1951. Now if someone would collect all the stories we know of that ship. Maybe someone could organize a get-together. How many of us are in Calgary?

Read your genealogy and enjoyed it so much. We too came to Canada from Germany on the Beaverbrae in August of 1953. We settled on a farm in Huntington Quebec, where my father was a hired hand. He came to Canada eighteen months earlier. My parents stayed in Quebec in the eastern townships until their death. I am presently living in Ontario. Dieter Bidner at bidmar@sympatico.ca

Hello Johanna!

It is wonderful what you have done for your Aunt Heike! I was so looking forward to corresponding over the internet with her! And so disappointed and sad to read here of her passing. It is very important that you contact me as soon as you read this. I went through your site, but could not find an email address. Be excited! This is good news for your Aunt's memory! Bonjour Heike! I was fascinated to read your very interesting site. Congratulations! Very weel done!

In fact I was a member of the crew of the Beaverbrae when your parents came across. I wss chief quarter-master on the Beaverbrae from the time she left Sorel where I was born incidentally. I was barely 18 years old and stayed until she was sold by Canadian Pacific; by then I was third officer. The captain was Captain Baugh, from Vancouver. The first officer was a mr McDuff also from Vancouver. The chief engineer was German and a member of the original crew when she was a workshop for german submarines hidden in a fjord in Norway with the Battleships Gneisenau and Tirpitz and I believe the Prinz Eugen.

I well remember the wonderful evenings during the crossings spent on Deck when many of the refugees would play accordeon and violon and would all sing together. There were recordings played on the ship's PA system of german songs by Zarah Leander. I am now a retired pharmacist and happily married and have eight children and seven grand children. Hope to hear some more from your reminiscence of the Beaverbrae.

I discovered your site while looking up info on the Beaverbrae. My family Walter Bielert, Lydia Bielert and my brother Dieter and my sister , Arnhild and me Gerhard left Bremerhaven in late Dec 1950 and arrived in Saint John just a few days into the new year - 1951. From there we crossed the country to Kelowna B.C. to live with my Uncle Ewald Bielert for a few months before we got our own accomodations.

My parents have since passed away , as has my uncle.

For me it was quite a traumatic journey - we were all seasick the whole time - except my three year old sister. Then the long train trip to Kelowna in the middle of winter was something never before experienced.

I have met only one other person who also emigrated on the Beaverbrae.

So I was very interested to read your account - and to bring back some mixed memories.

Right now I live in Pembroke Ont. , but in my half century in Canada have lived from Victoria to St. John's. Gerhard Bielert

Dear Mrs. McLaren looking for information on "Dahlberg" I saw your beautiful pages. In my ancestry there's a "Cornitius" mentioned to have served as "Gutsverwalter" on castle Kroßburg near St.Martin/ Neustadt/near Worms about AD 1700. The Cornitius/Cornetius/Corneto/Cornetto are of Lombardian noble origin , my line left 1703 Piemont and besides, came to the Palatinate. Ihr Klaus Peter Kornet, nee Cornetzky, called Korn too.

Heike,

Was surfing for Beaverbrae informtion. My parents arrived from Bremen also, but in June of 1950, just a few months before my birth. They also went to Saskatchewan - a little rural area called Cupar, where I was born. They too were daunted by the winter weather - a far cry from their homeland - Wolhynia - once Russia, then Poland, then Russia again - and left for Ontario where my mother's family had ended up. DPs - displaced persons - or as we like to say, Delayed Pioneers, my family has also prospered and now lived a half century in their new homeland. There are many Germans from Russia across Canada and the US who came after WWII - but many also before that - and who are also now researching their genealogy. I too have been searching and with a bit of success, but would dearly love to find my KUKASCH, BETHKE, BAIER and KOENIG family origins and roots in Deutschland. One day....

Congrats on your website. Helen Gillespie (nee Kukasch)

Hello Jean

Thanks so much for visiting my Aunt's site. My Aunt died last year and I have kept her site up as a memorial in her memory.

I agree that the dark background is hard on the eyes (but she just loved them) so I created some on white that could be printed out:

http://4heike.webhostme.com/printable/default.htm

Unfortunately, I don't have the additional info you're looking for. Sorry Wish I could help. :(

Kindest wishes, Johanna

Heike, I was looking for information on Nassau-Siegen and was attracted by your Fresian name. Good job here, kiddo! (But the dark background on most of your pages had me squinting miserably.) Can you by any chance tell me what the perimeters of Nassau- Siegen were? Sincerely, Jean searcher@micron.net

I love your site! The description of how your family tree grew, resembles mine, not so large yet though. Just under 1400 individuals, but growing. What attracted me to your site, however, was the story of the trip to Canada on the Beaverbrae. My father came from Germany to Canada (then age 11) on that same ship! The year 1952! But my father recalls coming in March. If your interested I have found a photo of this ship for when it still had the name "Beaverbrae" on the front. I can send via email. Would love to compare stories of "onboard conditions."

You can reach me at: tydare@home.com Sincerely, Barb(nee Ewald) - Calgary, Alberta

Hello my name is Thomas Kammer.I am living in Poland. You did a great work. I did't know my roots. All documents was damaged during the second world war in Koloyja (now Ukraina Republic). I only know that Phillip Kammer ,father of my grandfather, who died before end of 19century, came to Galicia (Austro-Hungaria Empire province) from central Austria maybe of oil investing. Dear Heike,Sorry it took so long to get to your guestbook, your mother and I are first degree cousins. That makes us not to be too distant related. Being blessed with two wonderful daughters and nearing my 77 birthday, it is the end of the name "von der Kammer" at this branch of the family tree. My wife Karin and I wish you all the best. Wonderful Page Heike!!!! Haven't gone through it all yet. You have done a lot of work and I am amazed at what you have come up with. Not that I didn't think you had it in you, but very professional. I have a Royal line on my Elliott side as well, or supposedly, if I am to believe the Family Search program. Descendants have said that they were from Royalty, and we didnt know where, but I have proofed back to a Daniel Farr and he descends from King Edward II and III and of course many others. Not sure how reliable the Ancestral Files of the LDS are?? They certainly are extensive. What part of Germany was your family from??? I noticed Kassel, Marburg, Neustadt and Darmstadt mentioned. That is where my Grandfather was from. Stausbach and Ohmes, very near there. A "Paper Detective" you are, for sure!!!! What a wonderful journey. I have loved mine and I can see you are loving yours. Best of luck with your page, and "Good Hunting"
