RICK BAKER

The Academy award winning special effects wizard Rick Baker has his cinematic roots firmly set in gorilla suit work. Constructing one is his teen years, Rick would make mischief tromping about town in his furry get-up. His first ape-man role came in SCHLOCK! but he truly shone in his stellar contribution to the much maligned 1976 remake of KING KONG. Though producer Dino de Laurentiis created a flurry of publicity about the massive animatronic ape built by Carlo Rambaldi, it was Baker and his superbly crafted suit that carried 99% of the ape scenes.
Baker would continue to revolutionize make-up effects, which lead to his second landmark simian outing, GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES. Although he did not climb into a suit, Baker and his team created the extended family of the English ape man.
Rick Baker's crowning achievement came with his Mountain Gorilla effects in GORILLAS IN THE MIST, the tale of primate researcher Diane Fossey. After extensive hours and research, Baker managed to completely fool even the most savvy viewer with cinemas most realistic gorilla suits ever constructed.
