GEORGE KOTSONAROS

A well educated immigrant from Greece, George Kotsonaros arrived in America in the early 1900's and quickly made a mark as a professional wrestler. Despite extensive schooling and fluency in several languages, George distinguished himself in multiple arenas of athletics before leaving his homeland. American audiences became quick fans of the lightweight wrestler who often tangled with larger adversaries. Like other muscled Hollywood stars of the time, the stocky athlete was spotted by a director who signed him up to a movie contract. George's physical prowess was coupled with sharp business sense and his investments should have lead to an early retirement. Unfortunately, the stock market crash of 1929 put the old boy back to square one. George spent the next two years rebuilding his reputation on the wrestling circuit until he was killed in a car wreck in 1933.
Kotsonaros made several appearances as a henchman-type heavy, but he played a bizarre human-gorilla crossbreed in the horror film THE WIZARD (1927). Other ape roles are a possibility but unconfirmed at this time.
