GEORGE BARROWS
 Born
in New York, George Barrows came West when his father appeared in an early
Western and decided to remain in California. Appearing in a few silents as a
child, it wouldn't be until 1934 that George was scouted at the YMCA for a
role as a heavy in CLEOPATRA. His strength and imposing presence coupled
with a talent for fencing kept George busy on the silver screen.
Barrows was somewhat of a late bloomer in the field of gorilla suit work. In
addition to several film roles in the fifties (ROBOT MONSTER, GORILLA AT
LARGE), George made numerous appearances in the exploding medium of
television. The burly fellow also had much in common with another gorilla
great, Charles Gemora. Besides a natural comic ability, like Gemora, Barrows
also constructed his suit from scratch. The suit he used was donated by his
family to the Natural History Museum in LA and is perhaps the only surviving
example pre-dating the 70's.
