About
the Program
The
2010/2011 Glacier Kings are entering their 18th season
as a member of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. The
team is based out of the Courtenay, B.C., located in the Comox
Valley. With an area population of over 60,000 the valley offers
a multitude of recreational opportunities and facilities ranging
from breathtaking scenery to hiking trails, ski resorts and
quality golf courses.
The
Glacier Kings play out of the 1400 seat arena at the Comox Valley
Sports Centre where they won the 1993-1994 VIJHL League Season
Championship. In 1994-1995 the Kings won the VIJHL Playoffs
and went on to compete for the Cyclone Taylor Cup (Provincial
Crown). 2009-2010 the Glacier Kings were the VIJHL North Division
Playoffs Champion.
The
Glacier Kings organization is looking for highly motivated and
intense players with physical and technical attributes, mental
toughness and self confidence with unequalled work habits. With
these qualities the coaching staff will develop a winning tradition
and provide a positive environment for the hockey club.
The
goal of the program is player development while also icing an
extremely competitive hockey club. The coaching staff will do
its utmost to develop and move players to the next level, be
it BCHL, WHL, or even university programs.
League
Information
The
VIJHL (Vancouver Island Hockey
League) is now entering its 38th season of operation. All
8 teams are based on Vancouver Island, making travel easier
and rivalries intense. Playing 48 games (24 home, 24 away),
the travel schedule is also appealing to many of the players
enrolled in high school or post graduate courses as there are
no over night road trips.

Glacier Kings
Hockey Program
At this time we are actively recruiting players for next years' team.
Players have to consider their options before making a decision. Therefore,
as head coach, I would like to provide you with some additional information
about the program, my personal coaching philosophy, and my coaching
background.
Program
· Practices are on Monday through Thursday from 7:45 AM to 9:00
AM. Note: If we have an away game the night before practice, that practice
will be cancelled.
· Practice plans will be posted in the dressing room and each
practice has specific listed goals and outcomes. I will do a pre-ice
talk before every practice, which will maximize activity time on the
ice.
· All games will be videoed and clips will be used to help players
improve different aspects of their game.
· Players will be given hockey specific sport psychological information
to facilitate their mental training.
· Fitness testing will occur at the main training camp and the
players will be re-tested throughout the season. Tests include: 1500
meter run, bench (135 or 185), sit-ups, pull-ups, standing long jump,
and hamstring flexibility. The team will provide gym memberships as
required.
· Depending on league schedule, the Christmas break will be about
a week.
· Our goal is to prepare players to play Junior A and/or University/College.
Since I coached in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference from 1992
- 2009, I have all the contact information.
Coaching Philosophy
· A tremendous work ethic in the pursuit of physical and mental
attributes greatly enhances the probability an athlete will reach his
potential.
· Practices are designed to develop individual technical skills
and tactics, as well as, team tactics and strategies. These attributes
are acquired through game-like drills that adhere to fundamental training
principles. In other words, required fitness can be attained through
drills rather than stops and starts.
· Four lines, eight defensemen and two goalies will be at most
of our practices. We will also have affiliate players that will be used
on a as needed basis.
· Fair but not equal. All players are expected to contribute
to the success of the team. Players must meet team expectations and
follow team rules. However, they will have different roles and will
earn their ice time.
· Players will be encouraged to play an up tempo physical brand
of hockey. They must be able to win battles and make personal sacrifices
for the betterment of the team.
· Sportsmanship, integrity and respect for all will be fostered.
Fighting will be discouraged.
· Team chemistry and team discipline will be promoted.
· Good communication between players and coaches will limit and,
if necessary, resolve any conflict situations.
· Hockey provides a medium for players to work on life skills
and lifestyle choices that will allow them to be contributing members
of our society.
· Our coaches will be positive role models. Personally, I am
a fitness fanatic and will challenge players to improve their overall
fitness.
Coaching Background
· Last season our team won their first play-off series in 10
years. We then won the semi-final series for the first time in 15 years.
· Seventeen years at Concordia University College of Alberta
where we won the Championship in 02/03. During that time, I received
two Coach of the Year awards.
· In 91/92, I coached the Lloydminster Blazers in the AJHL
· In 84-85, I coached the Vermilion Tigers when we won the Western
Canadian Junior B Championship.
· Started coaching in 1973 and won 5 Championships as a player/coach
in senior hockey.
· Graduated from The Physical Education Faculty at the U of A
in 1978 where I went through the Coaching Route of the PE Program.
· Completed a University of Alberta Masters Program that emphasized
Sports Psychology in 1989.
· Before coaching at Concordia, I spent 13 years as a physical
education teacher. During that time, I coached hockey and a variety
of other school sports.
· I have taught Coaching Clinics to prospective coaches and coached
several Hockey Alberta teams since 1990.
· In 1994, I went to Quebec City and completed my NCCP Advanced
II hockey certification.
In summary, we have a lot to offer to potential players who are interested
in working hard and striving to be the best they can be. Our owners
(Dave and Marsha Webb and Iris Churchill) have the player's best interests
at heart. We also have two excellent assistant coaches (Steve Ruthven
and Jordan Butcher) who are returning from last year.
We will be attending several Junior A camps and hopefully will get to
meet you at one of our upcoming camps.
Yours truly,
Jim MacLean
