"Experimentation is the hallmark of  Gary's work and water is at present his subject matter. Where will he go next? I hope to find out!" Diane Anderson, Exhibits Coordinator

"I first saw a series of Gary's trees at the Ferntree Gallery in Cochrane in 2003. I was struck by how vivid the colours were and how dynamic a technique he used to make his trees vibrate off the canvas. He painted only the base of the trees in a very abstract manner but they seemed to speak about their place in the very foundation of our world."

"I was quite taken by them and asked him to submit a proposal for a show at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre. Since that booking in 2007, his subject matter has changed to the waters that are the central figure for this show. The technique has only improved through experimentation and his quest for the best way to showcase rushing waters."  Diane Anderson

"My challenge is to create paintings that would act as a window, where you look at something familiar, yet you may feel that you have seen something in a new and different way. Using representational forms, mixed with abstract shapes and qualities found in nature; create a mood to engage someone in this aesthetic transaction."

Gary Langman - Artist Statement

Gary Langman was born in Montreal and graduated with honors from the Canadian Art Academy. Immediately after graduating, Gary worked as a commercial artist for a company called Studio B. Desiring to further his studies as a fine artist, Gary enrolled into the experimental arts program at the Ontario College of Art. After graduating he went to trade school to get his welding certificate and he also worked for a plastic company learning the art of mould making and plastic forming or extrusions.

Besides sculpting, most of Gary's time has been spent painting on canvas using oils.  His most aesthetically successful paintings tend to be the simpler compositions. "Knowing what to leave out is a skill that is developed over time and from listening to constructive criticism from those around you. Although I want my work to be striking when viewed from across the room, I also want the viewer to continue to find interest when up close.  Unexpected color, visual texture and large, strong, solid shapes can provide the interest that keeps the viewer engaged in a painting. Taking liberties with a subject, especially with those that appear commonplace, also prove to be the key to a painting's effectiveness."

Gary's recent works are a series of paintings, involving water, that take nature and converge with mood and subject thought. The tension that exists within the energy of water pounding itself against solid rock and unmovable barriers, explodes into a dynamic expression of life. "It is within this intense drama that a familiar object is turned from a natural phenomenon into an aesthetic experience. It is here the imagination separates itself from the realistic. It is from here where I want to introduce a little page out of life and make it readable."

Gary's art has been sold mostly to corporate clients such as Shanam Energy and Art Investors Co.  As well private collectors have purchased paintings through Ferntree Gallery and Art Space Gallery. Gallery representation also led to a rental of a painting called "First Snow" which was used in a movie called "Word of Honor".
