Welcome to Garland
Glass
And welcome to the art of handmade lampworked beads.
All of the glass beads and jewelry displayed
here was handcrafted by me, Tamara Garland. I work part-time
in my home-based studio in Surrey, BC, Canada. I became interested
in this art form in 2002 and I was hooked the first time I sat
down at the torch. Soda-Lime soft glass is my preferred glass
type. I worked on a Hot Head torch for the first two years and
now work primarily on a dual-fuel Minor torch.
My family has been in the art glass
business since shortly after I was born some 30... or so... years
ago. My current day job is at Sunlight Art Glass in Surrey where I assist
in most aspects of the business. Sunlight makes custom glass
windows as well as selling supplies for stained glass and warm
glass.
Glass beadmaking is the most satisfying
creative outlet I've found so far. I studied fine art at Kwantlen
University College and then enrolled in the Graphic & Visual
Design program. I discovered that I much prefer hands-on, tactile
art forms to computerized graphic design. Lampworking is most
definitely hands-on and highly addictive.
I really enjoy melting
glass in the torch and it gives me great pleasure to see how
others marvel over the fact that I made the bead
by hand.
I teach introductory classes at Sunlight and through Surrey,
Burnaby and New West Continuing Education and I love to see students
leaving the class admiring the little treasures they've just
made. As I'm sure you know, bead-lovers
are a unique group of people (if your looking at this page you
most likely are one) that truly appreciate unique and special
beads.
Well that's more than enough about me
so stay awhile, check out the gallery
and if you're looking for more resources and information on lampworking
