| It has been
said that anyone who saw a Sex Pistols gig later started a band. So,
here we have Joy Division, a band formerly known as Warsaw, who started
the band after seeing a Sex Pistols gig. Joy Division sounds nothing
like Sex Pistols, however, and are probably the greatest post-punk
band ever.
"Unknown Pleasure" came out in 1979 only
in the UK. The band was offered a million dollars for American distribution
but refused it. This proves that Joy Division was only in it for
the music and their love for it and it shows with one of the most
breathtaking albums to ever be recorded, "Unknown Pleasures".
"Unknown Pleasures" isn't an album you
can sit down and listen to in one sitting. It takes awhile to get
into it fully-to notice Ian's amazing, gloomy, and dark vocals;
the sharp and intense guitar work; and the beautifully written lyrics.
Joy Division is able to create a sound that barely any band can
match; it's intense, dark, heart stopping, and undeniably brilliant.
The fact that Ian later hung himself adds and even darker atmosphere
to an already vile recording.
After the death of Ian, Joy Division became New
Order. However, I can't recommend New Order due to their new-wavy
sound and the horribly overrated "Blue Monday" single.
It's definitely hard to follow up on Joy Division and I hope listening
to this album will bring mainstream fans into real music. "Unknown
Pleasures", to me, is the bands most complete and cohesive
work and it's a classic that should be in every serious music fans
collection.
