Directors

Pamela G Costes
Pamela G Costes is a doctoral candidate in ethnomusicology at the
University of Washington. She has trained with master musicians and
Filipino ethnomusicologists in the traditional instruments of the
northern and southern Philippines. She received her undergraduate degree
in Musicology with emphasis on Philippine and Asian music at the
University of the Philippines where she also performed actively with the
University's Philippine kulintang and Japanese koto ensembles. She became
research assistant to scholars on Philippine music and dance like Felipe
de Leon, Jr. and Steve Villaruz. Ms. Costes also conducted field research
in the Muslim region of the Philippines for the Cultural Center of the
Philippines and the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports. She
also became a senior researcher for the Philippine festival at the
Smithsonian Institution at Washington, D.C. She also conducted several
workshops and given lectures on Philippine mu! sic in Washington State.
At present, Ms. Costes is completing her dissertation on TUNOG PiL-AM and
also serves as the Executive Director of FAYCCA.

Hideaki Onishi
Dr. Hideaki Onishi has earned his doctoral degree in music theory from the
University of Washington, Seattle. Even before he started playing
kulintangmusic, Dr. Onishi was active as pianist and bass-baritone singer. He
learned kulintangmusic from Pamela Costes at the UW in 2001-2002, and
immediately began participating in her ensemble for workshops and performances
as a primary soloist around Washington State. As assistant director of TUNOG
PiL-AM, Dr. Onishi helps Ms. Costes teach kulintangto members, as well as
creates rhythmic exercises for them to expand their musical ability and
understanding of the tradition. Dr. Onishi currently teaches aural skills class
at the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, WA, as part-time instructor.
