A rather old-school chap is another favorite to quote by antivaccine websites.  He holds quite a few "interesting" opinions:

quote:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As Dr. Michael Odent courts controversy by claiming fathers should never attend the birth of their children: First, a labouring woman needs to be protected against any stimulation of the thinking part of her brain - the neocortex - for labour to proceed with any degree of ease.
This part of the brain needs to take a back seat and allow the primal "unthinking" part of the brain connected to basic vital functions to take over.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You’d think parents would wonder why he holds such outdated views (that also appear to be based on Scientology), but you can see below that he is extensively quoted because he also makes unproven claims about vaccines:.

quote from the vaclib site:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Michael Odent has written a letter in the JAMA (1994) where his figures show a five times higher rate of asthma in pertussis immunised children compared to non-immunised children. He is also quoted in the International Vaccination Newsletter (Sept. 1994): "Immunised children have more ear infections and spend more days in hospital."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, suddenly you are the most credible guy in the world if you say immunizations are doing the opposite of what they do.  Immunized children have LESS ear infections. He totally supports the next person we look at, Lanctot (featured further down on this page), and publicly defends her.

Odent's claims are proven to be untrue:

Quote:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...we found that DTP, OPV and MMR vaccines did not increase a child's risk of developing asthma.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vaccination Quotes?

For those new to vaccination debates, you will find that one way to try to validate claims against vaccines is to quote "experts".

People using quotes with anti-vaccine statements are mostly folks selling homeopathic, naturopathic, or other alternative remedies.  Even some doctors are in the ranks selling books and vitamins. You won’t find their ‘information’ in medical books though. They are rebels against the conspiracy!!

These quotes often try to support false claims of deaths and mutilation that they accuse vaccines of causing.

The most misleading tactics are the ones that use misquotes or other quotes that the person didn't even make.  Case in point is the widely misquoted
NEAL A. HALSEY M.D.

However, Halsey has an online testimony of why he is actually in favor of vaccines, and about how vaccines PREVENT brain damage.

quote:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was asked to comment on three issues: the number of vaccines children receive, combination vaccines and diabetes. I am not concerned about the number of vaccines children receive, and I look forward to the availability of several other vaccines that will help us prevent serious infections and cancer.  The human immune system is remarkable in its capacity to respond to millions of different antigens. Children are exposed to many thousands of bacteria, fungi and viruses beginning at the moment of birth. In the first few months of life the human immune system responds to many foreign antigens from these organisms. Each bacterium contains hundreds of different antigens including carbohydrates, fatty substances, proteins, RNA and DNA. Children develop antibodies to 17 different proteins in one common bacterium (Moraxella catarrhalis) and a strep throat infection results in immune responses to 25-50 different antigens.1 Some new highly effective vaccines are made using only one or two bacterial antigens.

On Combined Vaccines:
This issue was raised first in the United Kingdom by Dr. Andrew Wakefield. Dr. Wakefield's unfortunate statements at a press conference about separating measles mumps and rubella vaccines were based upon theory, not fact.

On autism:
We do know that encephalitis is one of the factors that pre-disposes children to autism. All three of the diseases prevented by the MMR vaccine, measles, mumps and rubella, can cause encephalitis. We would not want to leave children unprotected against these diseases for even a short period of time. The routine use of MMR has resulted in the prevention of many thousands of cases of congenital rubella syndrome, a recognized cause of autism. I support the continued use of the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccines as the safest and most effective means to protect children against these diseases.

Conspiracy Theories, Unverifiable Claims of Deaths, and Evidence Showing that the Quotes are Untrue

The conspiracy:

quote:
These facts are unknown to most medical people in the world, but then these doctors could all be part of the great conspiracy that Dr Kalokerinos claims is being run by the World Health Organisation and Save the Children Fund to use vaccination as a tool of genocide.

Classic case of a conspiracy theory.  In Nigeria folks believe the vaccines will make their children infertile.  There are false claims that estrogen has been found in the polio vaccines.  That leads to the even more inaccurate claim that estrogen will render a child infertile.  If that was the case, then all of the people vaccinated in the world would be infertile.  With the amount of babies that vaccinated people have had, we can plainly see for ourselves that this is not true.

The deaths Kalokerinos is famous for writing about are unverifiable of course.

The below is part of a tribute
to Kolakerinos and  a Dr. Dettman who both feel that vaccines are a tool of genocide:

quote:
I first heard about the great Dr Archie Kalokerinos from another "great", the great Dr Irwin Stone. In 1975 he introduced me to Archie's work with SIDS and convinced me to offer his book, "Every Second Child" to the public through my mail-order company (Wholesale Nutrition).

You see, they have developed the conspiracies to sell their "nutritional" products.  Why buy their products if vaccines are actually safe and effective?  Can they prove that overdoses of vitamin C can cure viral infections? No.  But that doesn't stop them from claiming that it does and doesn't stop them from selling their "cures" to customers.

What does Kalokerinos say when children get measles?
"Well, all right, I can fix them if they get measles."

Kalokerinos and Dettman are in business together, even though independent studies (pdf) prove them wrong (extra vitamin C does not shorten the duration or severity of an infection once a person has a viral infection). Vaccines have been proven to build immunity against viruses, and injections of vitamin C have not.  Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, and excess amounts are flushed out, so it doesn't matter how much extra is taken or injected. Only what the body needs is ever used.  The rest is just peed out. It is rare for a person to not get vitamin C in their regular diet every day, and vitamin C does not prevent people from getting sick from measles or any other virus.  Vitamin C injections and excessive vitamin C will only cause the body to excrete the excess amounts almost as soon as it is introduced to the body. Injecting vitamin C will not help people get better faster if they are already suffering from a viral infection.   Vitamin C is an essential nutrient, but advocating its use to treat diseases instead of preventing them is unethical.
Examples of Anti-Vaccine Quotes:

Many samples can be found at "vaclib.org"

There are quotes attributed to Moskowitz, Kalokerinos, Snead, Obomsawin, and many many others.

The persons quoted are always called "doctors".  Most people will assume that "doctor" means an MD.  But the quotes can be from  naturopaths, chiropractors, and even homeopaths.  Their actual titles are rarely indicated, and the extensions (like N.D. or D.C.) are left off of the name of the person that is being quoted.

NDs and DCs are "doctors", but are not medical doctors.  They have not gone to medical school, and for the most part do not understand how much of the physical body works.  A lot will even go as far as to say that diseases are never caused by microbes, or that only one microbe causes all cancer, or that oils will protect you from getting AIDS, etc.  Coulter, Moskowitz, and Snead (quoted 'experts') are typical of practicing homeopaths that don't like vaccines.

To find out more on why homeopaths and other non-medical doctors are biased against vaccines (vaccines contradict their theories of why people fall ill) quackwatch has outlined their philosophies:

http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/homeo.html

http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/Naturopathy/immu.html

Many of the quotes used by people on antivaccine websites are taken out of context or were never said by the person being quoted.

There is a quote attributed to Dr. Sabin at the above "quote site", but extensive searching doesn't reveal where and when it was said by him, and there is no record of him presenting in Italy in 1985 about vaccines. If anything it is a misquote.  It is either not true, or taken far out of context.

The Salk quote at vaclib.org is taken out of context.  Wild polio still exists, and still causes the outbreaks.  The oral vaccine is no longer used, but when it was used it was more effective because you didn't have to take 3-4 booster shots after the initial dose.  Nigeria is a good example where wild polio outbreaks occur.  Always keep in mind that vaccines, like everything else, are continually evolving.  They are now safer and more effective than ever before.

”Dr.” Eva Snead has her own site.

She is another alternative medical care supporter offering"
"HEALING MIRACLES CLINIC
WE OFFER UNIQUE, ADVANCED TREATMENTS
FOR CHRONIC DEGENERATIVE CONDITIONS, BASED ON
ALL "STATE OF THE ART" TRADITIONAL AND ALTERNATIVE SCIENCE AVAILABLE"

She has written extensively on AIDS and the conspiracy to cleanse the planet of certain peoples and questions the microbe connection to diseases.  Her rants about vaccines are intended to give people reasons to not vaccinate their children:

quote:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...the legend says that we were given cowpox because it has cross defence with smallpox. However, when the specimens of vaccine are investigated today that were made with the original virus, the peculiar thing is that the studies yield neither smallpox nor cowpox but a separate virus which has now been called vaccinia...

Of which, of course, the smallpox family is one of the herpes viruses...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then she complains that
"Vaccinia virus is an artificially propagated virus".

A quick Google search turns up:
"Different strains of vaccinia virus were generated in different cities throughout Europe and Asia, making it difficult to track the origins of the virus. The various strains were used to vaccinate individuals after acceptance of Jenner's initial studies
.

The virus is a closer strain to the less harmful cowpox than compared to the more harmful smallpox. It works to cause immunization against smallpox.  Smallpox was eradicated.

Herpes viruses are widespread and varied, and chicken pox is part of that group. Details on how vaccinia is made can be found at the medscape website.  Rest assured that isolating the components for the vaccine is much like the method used to isolate the flu vaccine after it is grown in chicken eggs.  The vaccines are not contaminated with other viruses and won't suddenly cause allergies to beef or chicken if the allergy didn't already exist.  New vaccines grown in cultures instead of with calf or sheep lymph are being developed in case it is needed again.

As for the AIDS conspiracy and her seeming to want to link it to mass smallpox vaccinations in Africa? The fact is that the HIV virus originated in monkeys, not domesticated European animals.  Smallpox vaccines were never made by using monkeys.  She also infers that the simple process of vaccination causes AIDS instead of HIV?  As can be read in the quoted information by Dr. Halsey, the antigens we are introduced to by simply breathing should then overload our bodies every day.  This is not the case.  Our bodies can handle many more vaccines at once than we are ever given.  They don't overload the immune system, and they don't cause AIDS.
Another good source of information on antivaccine quotes can be found at Doctor Ed Friedlander's website.  There he has information about a very quoted Raymond Obomsawin:

quote:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Several people have written me asking about a Raymond Obomsawin, variously described as an MD or PhD, who writes anti-immunization materials which you can buy.
According to some websites, which I'll let you find on your own, Dr. Obomsawin was commissioned in 1992 by the Canadian International Development Agency to prepare a report to guide its immunization policy.
But when Dr. Obomsawin's report was submitted, it was suppressed by sinister conspirators. A search of the NIH database shows that Raymond Obomsawin has only one peer publication, a popular article from 1978 for Canadian nurses about Indian health issues.
If you want to believe that the Canadian government really hired this guy as an elite scientific consultant, you're free to do so. Of course, I don't know one way or the other.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quoting a person who complains that their information is "suppressed" without verifying their credentials is irresponsible.  Any website that uses Obomswawin as a source of information should be ignored.
Dr. Guylaine Lanctot is one of the most unbelievable characters to write on vaccines and get the admiration of the antivaccine community.

quote from the book:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Vaccination is expensive and represents a cost of one billion dollars annually. It therefore benefits the industry; most notably, the multinational manufacturers. One sells the vaccines. The other then provides the arsenal of medications to respond to the numerous complications that follow. Their profits increase while our expenses go through the roof. To the point where we have simply had it up to here and are ready to accept the unacceptable, such as socialised medicine in the United States, for example."

Vaccination stimulates the immune system, the body's defense mechanism. Repeated, vaccination exhausts the immune system. It gives a false sense of security and, in doing so, it opens the door wide to all kinds of illnesses. Notably, to those related to AIDS, which can only develop on ripe ground, where the immune system has been disturbed. It causes AIDS to explode. It ensures that the illness flourishes perpetually.

I used to be in the practice of holistic medicine and chelation therapy and to those activities and dealing with vitamins and alternative methods I learned to know the wrath of the establishment.

--Dr Lanctot MD
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No, vaccination can’t exhaust the immune system. Our immune system can handle many antigens every day, all day long.

AIDS is an autoimmune deficiency syndrome. Vaccines don’t cause AIDS. There is clear proof of what causes autoimmune deficiency syndrome, and it’s never vaccines.

One cause is HIV. HIV attacks T cells in the body, so they can no longer work with the immune system. THAT leaves you open to diseases, not vaccines. AIDS is a syndrome. It can’t "explode". If the immune system was "disturbed", then vaccines won't do more harm than the diseases would.  The risks associated with the diseases are far more costly than vaccination.  One now famous case is Hannah Poling.  Hannah has a mitochondrial disorder that causes swelling of the brain because of an enzyme deficiency.

quote:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mitochondrial disorders of the sort suffered by Hannah are genetic in nature and rare, an estimated 5.7 individuals per 100,000 worldwide, and, as described well in this New Scientist article, the subset of these disorders that cause autism-like symptoms is even more rare. It is also known that children with mitochondrial disorders are prone to encephalopathy in response to stress or fever that can cause them to regress. The source of this stress can often be an infection, such as a cold or normal childhood illness, that results in a fever. The reason is that the mitochondria are the “batteries” or energy sources of the cell, and mitochondrial diseases can lead a child to be “energy challenged,” so to speak. Because neurons have such a high constant resting energy requirement, stressors like fever deplete the neurons of energy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Children with mitochondrial disorders are prone to autism-like regression because of the disease they were born with.  Other microbial diseases worsen the condition.  Vaccines will prevent some, but not all of those diseases.  In this case the parents were convinced that a fever from the vaccine could also have exacerbated the condition.  Either way, her autism-like symptoms were unavoidable.  To say vaccines are bad because of cases like this is like saying eating meat and other protein products (eggs) is bad for everyone because it can cause autism-like symptoms in people with PKU.

Vaccination is inexpensive compared to the expenses that are incurred by the diseases.  Can Lanctot really suggest it would be better to forego the cost of vaccination and allow people to die instead?
The Health Newsletter where Susan DeSimone is Quoted from has a little disclaimer, of course.
quote:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Nature's Healing Newsletter is intended for information and educational purposes only. It is not intended to diagnose any ailment or prescribe any remedy. It is not meant to be a substitute for professional help. It is intended to set forth historical uses of natural remedies. A person should consult a duly approved health professional for any condition which requires their services...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But she does say:
quote:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even the WHO (World Health Organisation) has admitted, disease and mortality rates in Third World countries have no direct correlation with immunisation procedures or medical treatment, but they are closely related to the standard of hygiene and diet. A 1973 issue of Scientific American revealed the same finding : that "over 90% of all contagious disease was eliminated by vastly improved water systems, sanitation, living conditions and transportation of food." Mass vaccinations did not appear on the scene until a century after the decline in infectious diseases started (1850-1940), but inoculations were, and still are given full credit. --Susan DeSimone
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can't get on the members page, but she is not touted as a doctor or anything. She may be "good" with the vitamins though?  Is she even a nutritionist or something that would give her some credentials?

These claims that "better hygiene" and not vaccines were the result of the decline of infections disease can easily be refuted. In fact, better hygiene was blamed for the rise in polio.  Not only that, but the diseases ravage areas where immunization rates fall.

Dr. James A. Shannon was quoted on the above 'vaccine quote page', but there is no record of him ever saying anything in the supposed quote. So, an email was sent to his employer:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To whom it may concern,
I was wondering if you could shed some light on this quote: "The only wholly safe vaccine is a vaccine that is never used"
Dr James A. Shannon, National Institute of Health, USA
Why did he say that? In what context was it used? Does he really feel vaccines are more harmful than good?
He is being quoted over and over again.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the reply:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: NIAID Office of Communications and Public Liaison
Regarding the quotation attributed to Dr. James A. Shannon, this office does not have any information about when or in what context Dr. Shannon may have made such a statement. He served as director of the National Institutes of Health from 1955-1968. You may wish to read a brief biography of Dr. Shannon at: www.history.nih.gov/exhib...hannon.htm.
We hope this information is helpful to you.

I've already been to the site in the reply, and of course there is nothing on his stance about vaccines, and nothing on vaccines even. This brings me to the conclusion that people are LYING about what was said.
Viera Sheibner has a PhD in GEOLOGY, and thus can call herself 'doctor'. She sells books and videotapes to parents over the internet.  She has no education on the actual workings on the human body and the immune system, nor on how microbes attack the body... especially viruses.

Ms. Scheibner has also claimed that Japan discontinued measles and pertussis immuniztion. An examination of relevant current data reveals her claim to be erroneous. According to the World Health Organization Japan has high levels of pertussis immunization coverage (over 80%).

Ms. Scheibner's lack of training in the health sciences has led her into other blunders. One of many examples: at one point in her book she claims the cause of Legionnaire's Disease is the flu vaccine (the disease is actually caused by the organism Legionella pneumophilia and related strains.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
quote:
She uses vast numbers of quotes from a number of sources, taking isolated snippets of information which support her contention but does not cite the tenor of the article or the context in which the quote is included.
Dr Viera bases her validity on the fact that she worked as a research scientist but fails to mention where.
What Dr Viera, in the mind of her followers, is doing is legitimising and giving credence to a very dangerous practice and helping to build a pool of unimmunised people that can allow preventable diseases to remain and spread through the community.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scheibner won a bent spoon award in 1997 for her efforts, but she is still quoted on antivaccine websites and by parents on various forums to this day.
Last, but not least, Andrew Wakefield has caused the most damage.  His disproved study and claims have caused the cases of measles to rise and cause deaths all over the world.  People are dying, like the teenager in the UK in 2006.

It cannot be said enough that the antigens in vaccines do not overwhelm the immune system, and making 3 vaccines instead of one only triples the cost and the number of shots a child has to get in the arm.  There is no benefit to separating vaccines, and no reason to.

Conclusion

This is just a small collection of characters that are very often quoted on websites and forums all over the world.  Their reasons to not vaccinate are not valid, and should not be listened to, but many people heed their misquided assertions.  As vaccine preventable diseases become common again, and more children die or are injured for life, will these people answer to what they have caused?  No.  They will take their profits from their book sales, alternative medicine sales, or vitamin sales and will never admit to being wrong.   If anything they will continue to find things to blame vaccines on and sell parents every "cure" under the sun for things that they blame on vaccines.

Many of the medical doctors on this page (Wakefield, Odent) make a critical thinking error combined with biased observations without checking their ideas against studies that have clarified causation.  Studies confirm that vaccines don't cause AIDS, don't increase the rates of ear infection, don't cause autism, don't cause ADD, don't cause increased allergies, don't cause cancer, etc.

Vaccines are given throughout childhood, and claiming that all "bad" things that happen after vaccination while ignoring the normal rates that these "bad" things happen for a population irregardless of whether vaccinations are used is careless. Going further and telling parents that vaccines are the cause of everything under the sun without proof, while using only an argument to authority (listen to me because I'm a doctor), is unethical.

Other doctors on this page are  biased because they are taught that alternative medicine is good and "western" or "mainstream" medicine is bad no matter what. They don't understand how vaccines even cause immunity, and simply repeat everything bad that they've heard.  They are not taught how to check how to find out if the information is true.  Instead, they are taught to accept that it is true just because that is what someone else says.

This simple thinking process leads its practitioners to accept that their "medicines" work without proof (other than useless anecdotes).  People with serious medical issues, like diabetes and epilepsy, have been told to go off of their medications with dire consequences.  There is little that can be done, since the practitioners were simply misguided by their educations.  For some reason, there continues to be an acceptance of these kinds of treatment strategies, until someone dies, out of "politeness" or the fallacy that there sitll might be something to it because so many people say so. If they aren't allowed to treat serious conditions they claim that mainstream medicine is simply jealous of their therapies (even though people die when they are advised to go off of their "mainstream" medicines).   In many cases the PARENTS are charged if their children die after they listen to these practitioners. It's buyer beware.
