73 TV Special

One Billion Tune In

By 1973 Elvis had played his way around most of the major cities in the United States. Ever since his return to live touring in 1970, there had been rumors and expectations that he might play abroad. Fans in Britain and the rest of Europe, Australia and Japan had been faithful to him for many years. And for many years they kept up the pressure to try to get him to play concerts in their countries. The Colonel's answer to this was to arrange a television show that would be broadcast all over the world simultaneously, via the new wonders of satellite transmission.

The result was one of the biggest audiences in world television history - and a failure to satisfy Elvis's overseas fans.

In Europe some networks showed an edited version of the show the next day, but fans in Britain didn't get to see the program at all. After the show was over Elvis played a few more songs to an empty auditorium, just for the cameras. Most of these were included in an extended version of the show which, was eventually seen on American Television in April

The Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite special was filmed in the Honolulu International Convention Center in front of 5,500 fans. A dress rehearsal on the previous evening had also played before a full audience. Although the show might have seemed to have global pretensions, it was principally aimed at opening a new market for Elvis and Elvis products in the Far East. The show was broadcast live at 12.30a.m. to catch the peak television slot in Japan. Elvis Presley Week had been declared in Tokyo in the build up to the pro-gram, where it gained around 40 per cent ofviewers. The Philippines, South Vietnam Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong and Australia all joined in, to give an audience over a billion.
