B-2 battle droids or more commonly known as super battle droids, were upgraded versions of the B-1 battle droids used first by the Trade Federation during the Battle of Naboo and later by the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

One of the main design flaws of the standard B-1 battle droid was its reliance on a Droid Control Ship to provide a signal; if the ship were disabled, the battle droids would become useless. The super battle droid did not rely on such a signal and had a greater capacity for independence. Their frames were larger and more heavily armored than those of a B-1. Blasters were mounted on their arms, and though they can use external weaponry, their large hands have difficulty with smaller blasters. For the sake of efficiency, they used many B-1 parts.

Though more advanced than standard battle droids, super battle droids were still no match for the creative intelligence of clone troopers. Both super battle droids and clone troopers first saw combat at the Battle of Geonosis, and the new B-2 designs proved formidable but ultimately inferior.

Super battle droids saw use throughout the Clone Wars as soldiers for the Confederacy along with its smaller cousins and the dreaded droideka. Though the first super battle droids seen on Geonosis wore an unpainted dull silver tone, many of the droids used in later battles of the Clone Wars were painted a metallic blue, likely to help them stand out from the red coloration the Confederacy used for its standard battle droids.

A grapple droidIn order to contend with superior clone, Jedi, or native forces, the super battle droids were usually retrofitted with adversarial specific parts. However, this method was introduced late in the war and had little effect on the effectivity of the droid army. One of the known remodelling of the droid was the grapple droid, which had heavier armor and a larger frame. This droid was programmed to be a close combat model able to recieve primary lightsaber slashes and disable enemies through its electrocuted claws.

It is unclear who invented the B-2 battle droid; the Neimoidians designed the standard B-1 and even modelled it after themselves. But for the B-2, it is believed that the B-2 upgrade (which has many design elements of the B-1) was produced following a deal between Count Dooku and Poggle the Lesser, but other sources claim that the Techno Union foreman Wat Tambor took the existing design and upgraded it. The Techno Union and its member world of Geonosis were the chief suppliers of both kinds of droids for the Confederacy at the beginning of the Clone Wars.

During the Clone Wars, B-2s would become an important component of the Separatist Droid Army. They particpated in many battles including the Battle of Geonosis, Battle of Muunilinst, Battle of Coruscant and Battle of Kashyyyk, including numerous others throughout the galaxy. Following the execution of the Separatist Council by Darth Sidious's new apprentice Darth Vader formerly Anakin Skywalker, the B-2s were de-activated.
