Ordered by Count Dooku and manufactured by Holowan Mechanicals, the IG-100 MagnaGuards (or Self-Motivating Heuristically Programmed Combat Droid) were designed to be General Grievous' personal bodyguards. The two meter tall MagnaGuards carried lightsaber-resistant electrostaffs and wore cloaks similar to those of Grievous' old Kaleesh bodyguards during the General's time as a Kaleesh warlord.

Most MagnaGuard droids carried an electrostaff, but ranged models were also utilised, often specialising in dedicated weapons such as grenades, Bulldog rifles and missile launchers. The colour of the droid denoted the particular model—black, alabaster, blue and the rare grey were all spotted throughout the war. The droids were remarkably resilient, even for a droid design. They were capable of surviving decapitation and were able to fight effectively even after such an injury, due to backup processors in their chests. The strong cortosis metal that their bodies were constructed from allowed the droids to survive great falls. Furthermore, their hands could detach from their sockets and attach to other surfaces or objects.

The MagnaGuard was also part of the same series as the later IG-88 line.

An IG-100 MagnaGuard fights Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi onboard the Invisible HandAnakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi also battled two of these on the bridge of General Grievous's command ship, the Invisible Hand. Obi-Wan beheaded his opponent, only to discover that they were still able to fight without their heads. Anakin quickly cut his droid to pieces, and Obi-Wan finished destroying his.

Obi-Wan also faced four of these on Utapau. He destroyed three of them immediately when he used the Force to crash a large block of metal upon them. The other was pinned under the block and destroyed by Obi-Wan shortly thereafter.

Training

Originally, the MagnaGuards were programmed with the optimum in combat techniques. As a result, Grievous had their minds wiped and trained them all individually. Once they were put to use, Grievous would not allow any repairs to be made to the droids, believing that their numerous scrapes and battle scars made them look more intimidating to opponents.
