Burkeville

The following write-up was provided by the President of the Sea Island Heritage Society who resided in Burkeville during his childhood.
"Its a great image of the 300-home subdivision called Burkeville where I grew up 1945-1959. It was built to house the workers at the Boeing Aircraft (Canada) Ltd plant on Sea Island. Its nice to see the exact date of the image as Sept 13, 1945. One month before my Mom moved into 233 Boeing Avenue waiting for Dad to return from overseas. The Sea Island Elementary School wasn't built until 1947 and it is not in the photo. The curved bridge was between Dinsmore Island and Sea Island and was access off the end of Doherty Road. Dinsmore Island and Pheasant Island were filled over with sand spoilings dredged up from the Middle Arm of the Fraser River starting in the early 50's. Eventually Russ Baker Way was built on the western edge and today houses the new BCIT Aerospace Campus. The buildings near the upper left corner are the 'Frasea Farm' complex (owned by the Grauer family)."
