Port Alberni is located in the central interior of Vancouver Island British Columbia and is nestled between the Majestic Arrowsmith Mountains and Vancouver Island's west coast communities of Tofino and Ucuelet. The Port Alberni area, sometimes better known as the Alberni Valley, has become known as the community with a heart and the salmon capital of the world. Thousands of tourists visit the Alberni Valley yearly for sight seeing and sport salmon fishing in the Alberni Inlet, Barkley Sound, and the waters off the rugged west coast of British Columbia's Vancouver Island. The Port Alberni area has some of the best salt water salmon, halibut, and bottom fishing in all of British Columbia. The area also boasts some of the greatest, if not best, river fishing in the fall, winter, and, summer. Sockeye, Chinook , Coho, and summer and winter Steelhead fill the waters of the Stamp and Somass Rivers during the year and give anglers a perfect opportunity to fish year-round in the quiet waters of these famous fishing rivers.
Port Alberni's Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound are famous for its large return of Sockeye, Chinook and Coho returns. The best salmon fishing in British Columbia begins in mid-June with the large schools of returning Sockeye. Later in the summer the Alberni Inlet is loaded with big Chinook and Coho trophy fish. Anglers world wide and local residents enjoy the opportunity playing with and hooking these big fish.

Every Labour Day, people from all over the world salmon sportsfish for the biggest salmon. Each day of the three day derby thouands of dollars of prize money is passed to contestants who catch the biggest salmon, or who may be fortunate enough to have a highest weight.
