Isla Mujeres or “Island of Women” was named by 17th century Spaniards who found hundreds of female figurines and a temple that was dedicated to the goddess Ixchel when they landed on its shores.
The island was inhabited by Mayans and Maya is still the first language for many islanders. Isla Mujeres is a small island that is only 5 miles long and ½ mile wide but is able to boast a world famous coral reef for snorkel enthusiasts and magnificent Caribbean white sand beaches. Among these are Playa Indios, Playa Gaviota and Playa Lancheros, which is famous for its Yucatan barbequed fish dinner called; Tikinxic. Zama Beach and North Beach are only minutes away by taxi along with the Turtle farm, the Dolphin Discovery Center and the world famous Garrafon Snorkelling Park. The colourful downtown area offers interesting restaurants, and gift shops. For those craving more, Cancun is only 20 minutes away by ferry where one can tour the famous ruins of Tulum, Coban and Chichen Itza or cheer for the bull at the downtown arena while enjoying a real “Mexican bullfight”.
