ONTARIO
Most executions were carried out by hanging. At least one group of prisoners was shot. More known executions were carried out in Ontario than any other province. A number of prisoners were executed for treason during the War of 1812 and the 1837 rebellion. Executions took place throughout many towns. A large number were hanged at Toronto's Don Jail including the last three executions carried out in Canada.


UPPER CANADA (1791-1841)
In 1791, the province of Quebec was divided at the Ottawa River into Upper and Lower Canada.

Christie, James 1828 hanged York (Toronto) murder M ? ? farm labourer ? Beat Charles Wood to steal the boy's horses. Escaped to the United States and was extradited. PROVINCE OF CANADA-CANADA WEST (1841-1867)
As a result of the Durham Report, the colonies of Upper and Lower Canada were joined into one colony; the Province of Canada was officialy proclaimed February 10, 1841. The area that was the former Upper Canada was known as Canada West.
