Newfoundland Mitts

2 sets double point needles 4 MM and 4-1/2 MM.
2 different colours of knitting worsted, called A (main colour) & B.

PATTERN #1:-
Knit 4 in B, slip 2 sts purlwise in A, repeat to end of round. Repeat this row 4 more times. Purl 2 rows in A.

PATTERN #2:-
K1 in B, slip 2 sts purlwise in A; (K4 in B, slip 2) repeat as in ( ) to end of round ending with knit 3 in B.
Repeat this row 4 more times. Purl 2 rows in A.

BEGIN:-
With 4 MM needles, in "A" cast on 36 sts (12 per needles). Work even in rounds of K1, P1 ribbing for 3 inches.
Change to 4-1/2 MM needles. Purl, increasing 1 stitch at each end of each needle to end of round. (42 stitches on needle). Purl one more row.
Attach Colour "B", but do not break yarn "A". Starting with Pattern #1, work a total of 3 patterns (that is Pattern 1, Pattern 2, and one more of Pattern 1).
Work first 5 rows of Pattern 2; next row purl 2 sts in A, slip next 7 sts on a stich holder for thumb. Cast on 7 stitches, purl rest of row, Purl next row.
Knit 5 more patterns, ending with 2 purl rows. Knit row in "A".
Break colour "B".
Next Row:- Knit 4, K 2 together; repeat to end of row.
Next Row:- Knit.
Next Row:- Knit 3, K2 together; repeat to end of row.
Next Row:- Knit.
Next Row:- Knit 2, Knit 2 together; repeat to end of row.
Next Row:- Knit.
Next Row:- Knit 1, Knit 2 together; repeat to end of row.
Next Row:- Knit.
Next Row:- Knit 2 together.
Break yarn. thread end through remaining stitches. Draw up and fasten securely.

To Make Thumb:-
Slip stitches from stitch holder. With "A" knit first 5 stitches, on second needle knit next 2 stitches and cast on 3 more, on third needle cast on 4 stitches. (Toatl of 14 stitches).
Knit in rounds for 2-1/4 inches.
Knit 2 together to end of round. Break yarn, thread end through remaining stitches and fasten off.
