The Black-Grey Water System
|
This tank is located in the rear bay and is situated directly under the toilet. The drains from the sinks and the showers are plumbed to the tank via 1¼ ABS pipe. The tank is constructed of ¾" GIS plywood. The dimensions are 24" x 22" x 54". The good side of the plywood was placed on the inside. |
|
The tank is screw nailed and glued together on the joints. Then I placed one half of a 2" x 2" ripped on a 45° angle into the corners. These were caulked with a silicone sealant, and screwed into place. |

I picked up the fiber glass materials at Home Depot. I have read a lot about it's application and use, but I had never used it before. The person I was talking to had used it quite a bit in the past in the automotive industry and it was he who suggested using the famous "Red Green Fixum - Hold Everything together Tape". The only caveat he offered, with tongue in cheek, was that the application of the fiber glass application extend well past the edge of the tape!! |

Applying the Fibre glass
|
Make sure everything is clean, and the wood is "roughed" up with 80 - 100 grit sand paper. This is to give a little roughness to the wood for the fiber-glass to adhere to. I used the fibre mat, and cut it into strips about 10 inches wide, and 2 feet long. Each strip entered into the corner, and came just past it, so that when all the strips had been laid, there was three layers of mat in the corner. Then I took a piece of mat about 10 inches square, and place it into the corner so that each corner had 4 layers of mat plus the hardener. The top side of the container has a frame of 2 x 2 around it and it is covered in fiber glass starting about 2" below and coming up and over the top. The interior of the tank is painted with 3 coats of hardener. This insures that the wood will not be affected by liquids carried in the tank |

| The top of the tank has three spray nozzles mounted on the top of the tank... One is placed so that the force of the spray is directed to a point very near where the waste from the toilet lands in the tank, the others are placed to the right of the drain exit, near the wall, one near the corner and the other one about the middle of the tank. A fourth sprayer is located on the opposite end about two inches up directing the spray towards the drain. They are all connected to a manifold of PCV pipe and valves. The sprayers are individually controlled and do a great job of stirring up the waste as it is being dumped. |
| All inlet connections are connected to the tank with mechanical couplers....which is a rubber coupler with a tightening clamp at each end. This allowed for easy removal if the tank has to be removed or changed .. |
