Advantages of  Inter-disciplinary Clinics

Clinics that utilize inter-disciplinary teams rather than the more common multi-disciplinary teams are advantageous to patients with facial prosthetics. The members of the inter-disciplinary team meet with patients at the clinic rather than patients making separate appointments with various specialties in different parts of the city at different times. As an example, a patient with implants in their mouth might meet with a plastic surgeon, dentist, prosthodontist, speech pathologist and nutritionist at the clinic. This inter- disciplinary approach can benefit patients in several ways.

  • The convenience saves patients time and anxiety. It can sometimes take months to book a test or an appointment with each specialist.
  • New and existing patients have an increased sense of acceptance and comfort. The medical personnel attending a clinic have experience with the craniofacial conditions presented. They understand the challenges and the difficulties involved.
  • The patient becomes an active participant in decision making. Questions from a patient or family member can be quickly addressed with all parties present.
  • Open communication becomes possible, increasing the level of understanding by patients.
  • An increased understanding will help patients assume more responsibility for their health care.
  • Patients feel less vulnerable and more in control of the situation. This will help decrease anxiety.
  • Patients and family members have a central place to call with questions and concerns.

When the patient is provided with education, skills and support, a patient self-management style evolves. This is especially necessary when patients live long distances from the clinic. In these ways, inter-disciplinary teams can help to treat the whole patient by supporting and understanding all of our needs.
