Self Esteem |
| To a great degree, ones
self esteem is gained through interaction with others and how they treat us. Facially
different persons have a desire for the privilege to move about in public anonymously and
not be bothered by visual and verbal assaults. When rude comments are made some feelings
such as: shame, helplessness, anger and humiliation can result. Unfortunately, facially
different persons have a heightened awareness and sensitivity to signs of what we perceive
to be discomfort, embarrassment or rejection. When I am talking to someone and they notice
my prosthesis, I can tell immediately. This can cause awkwardness for both of us. To avoid
this situation I try to make it easier for others by my actions but it is stressful and
emotionally tiring. I will move my head from side to side rather than my eye. Trying to be
at the same level is also helpful, when they sit I sit and when they stand I stand. This
way the real eye will not be at a different angle from the one that is fixed. Facial
rehabilitation using a prosthesis does not give us a normal face but from a less
presentable one to a more presentable one. This can make the difference between total
withdrawal and being able to participate in social interaction.
