    Into The Black Poster 1
Into The Black Poster This is a poster for the upcoming Serenity/Firefly fan film Into The Black. For more information in the film see their website: www.intotheblack.ca. The background image is a composite of several images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
    C314 Skyhook composite
C314 Skyhook Poster A composite image of the Skyhook spacecraft model used in Into The Black (see above). The baclground image of the hangar is from the Cooper Smith Agency Website: www.coopersmithagency.com
    Winter House
Winter House I made this pic as a Christmas card. I didn't expect to have to spend so much time tweaking the snow shader, but snow is hard to re-create. The best illusion I could come up with involved adding a touch of blue glow to the shadowed areas of the snow using the luminance shader channel. This gives the effect of light filtering through the translucent snow.
    The Promenade
Promenade A mountaintop town would be a prime spot for windmills. The promenade boardwalk encircles the windmills and offers a view of the valley far below.
    The House On The Hill
House On The Hill This picture was inspired by the scenery in and around Tofino, BC. Just across the inlet from Tofino is Meares Island, which features a fantasic boardwalk - the inspiration for this image. The picture itself was created in Animation:Master.
    Lakeshore
Lakeshore Another piece done in Animation:Master, this image was an exploration of natural forms.
    Lighthouse - Grey Morning
Lighthouse More Tofino/Ucluelet-inspired work. This is weather more typical of the Pacific Rim, which I was only able to capture after switching packages to Cinema4D, and acquiring an additional year's experience in painting textures. A lot of the water spray was hand-painted in Photoshop after the base image was rendered.
    The Library Grand Hall MkI
Library Grand Hall An experiment in radial architecture quickly expanded into this library. I was still new to Cinema 4D at the time and was playing with the radial instancing tools. Since then I have spent a lot of time trying to expand and complete this library.
    The Library Exterior MkII
Library Concept 2 My second attempt at making a suitable exterior for the Grand Hall pictured above. The idea was to combine gothic, classical and modern styles of architecture together.
    The Library Exterior MkIII
Library Concept 3 Another take on the same idea, this time using mostly gothic features based on european cathedrals. The main problem was with apparent scale. In order to give the doors pleasing proportions, I had to make them extremely large, and thus it makes the entire structure look smaller. A Library MkIV would be fun to work on, but for now the library has been shelved in favour of more pressing projects.
    Platforms: The Library Upper Gallery
Library Upper Gallery The interior of the central tower of the Library is a vast, open space with suspended platforms hanging over empty space. This area would be directly above the Grand Hall, and would have tables and chairs for reading. Suspended stairways would connect the platforms, but this area would probably not be for the faint of heart, as the drop would be several hundred feet to the Grand Hall floor below.
    Desert Truck
Desert Truck One of my first vehicles in Cinema 4D, thus truck is part of a larger story that I hope to complete someday. This was also my first attempt at hand-texturing a model. Since I did not know anyhting about UV mapping at the time, and used projected textures, my success was mixed, at best. A new version of this truck is in the works.
    Dune Buggy
Dune Buggy The basic idea for this vehicle is that mounting the wheels on legs would afford increased maneuverability. Such a vehicle couls step over obstacles and vary its track and wheelbase to suit the situation. However, getting actuators of sufficient size, responsiveness and strength to make this worthwhile is not currently possible, but that doesn't make it any less fun to build in 3D. Someday I'll texture this sucker.
    Dune Buggy Composite
Dune Buggy Composite A Photoshop composite showing the Dune Buggy in action. This was an exercise for me to see if I could effectively match the vehicle to the background plate, making it look like it "belonged" in the picture, with appropriate details like shadows, reflections in the windows, and deformation in the tires to suit the rocks.
    Shuttle
Shuttle A small spacecraft that I built for animation. It has functional landing gear and other details. It was a good testbed for developing techniques I used when designing the Skyhook model of the Into The Black project. It also represents another of my attempts at texturing.
SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber (US Navy c1941)
Dauntless This model was an exercise in working from reference photos and diagrams to create a complex shape. The airplane itself was a very historically significant design, and was chosen for the wealth of information that was available and could be used in my diagram of the same.
