To enter
Afghanistan during the war with the Soviets required dressing like an
Afghan and having an Afghan name. Najib-ullah, meaning pure of God, became
my Afghan name. Then a quick trip to the tailor's shop set me up with the
clothing. Unfortunately I was informed my clothes were too effeminate. The
long shirt fell below my knee cap in Pakistani style. I had to
return and shorten the offending shirt to just above the knee. With a
turban, sash, and dyed hair and eyebrows, I was ready to enter
Afghanistan. |
