Useless

He says
“Wanna go somewhere tonight?”
So you put on something tight
And go out with the crowd
He tells
A million stories by the way
But all the things you wanna say
You couldn’t say out loud
And though a week ago he’d never talk about her
You’re getting the impression that he couldn’t do without her
You stumble home
Feeling sick from too much wine
It’s more than just a waste of time,
It’s useless

He says
“Why don’t we go out someplace?”
You do your hair and paint your face
But you know he’s on his guard.
You laugh
At something witty that he’s said
A painted woman, lips stained red,
You’re trying far too hard.
The game is over, reality set in
And scattered all the pieces, but you know you didn’t win
And now
Perhaps you’ll get a kiss goodnight
But this time, it’s just polite
It’s useless

Try to catch his eye
Try to hold his smile
Try to reason why
It was so good for a while

He had
Such a lovely time although
He’s got another life you know
He makes it very clear
Do you
Write him off with some regret
Or stay to take what you can get?
It isn’t much, I fear
And all that you can think ‘bout knowing right from wrong
Just seems like an excuse for when you can’t get what you want
So though
You’d like to get him off your mind
You know you’ll try again and find…
It’s useless
