Anne (I Could Learn From Her)
She loves him with empty hands
With no hopes and no demands
With nothing to be said or done
For she knows he’s found someone
She knows they’re fine, she knows they’re far
The sun shines always where they are
He’ll never see her tiny star
But at times I’m almost sure
I could learn from her
She loves him in empty rooms
Blends a poem out of old perfumes
She’s learned to swim in a sea of flames
She never burns, she never blames
She lets the pain come passing through
Opens a window without a view
And I could teach her something new
Or instead, if I prefer
I could learn from her
Then there’s me, always saving face
Closing the window on my empty place
I say the things I don’t believe
And laugh so they won’t see me grieve
I could throw away all hope of gain
Bare my soul to love and pain
Be half a saint and half insane
If I only could be sure
I could learn from her
