SOLOMON ISLANDS: Western Province - Seghe, Gizo, Munda
The lagoon-studded Western Province (New Georgia), or simply the West as it is more commonly known, is probably the most picturesque part of the Solomons. It also boasts ownership of most of the prime dive sites in the country. Gizo, on Ghizo Island, overlooks a lagoon with a myriad of small islands, one of which is Kennedy (Plum Pudding Island). A large number of iKirabiti live on Ghizo, having moved there in the 1950's from overcrowded islands in their native Gilbertese Islands. Munda, the largest settlement on New Georgia, is actually a series of small villages stretching 6 km along the Roviana Lagoon, the village of Lambete being the most developed in the area. Seghe, a sub provincial headquarter on the southeast coast of New Georgia, is a stop on the flight from Honiara to Munda and Gizo.
