SOLOMON ISLANDS:  Honiara, Guadalcanal

Although Honiara, the capital of Solomons Islands, is located on Guadalcanal and is populated by people from all over the country, the majority of the town's residents come from Malaita Island. This fact helped perpetrate the two-year conflict (1998-2000), and led to the subsequent evacuations of non-Guadalcanal people back to their home islands. Life in Honiara is returning to normal, although the economy is deteriorating still and medical services have yet to be brought up to standard. The Malaitan residents of Honiara have returned, and now with the presence of the Australian RAMSI forces, life is slowly returning to normal
