Oil cooler replacement, June 2005: after 220 k miles (first 85k on the diesel) I thought it prudent to replace my oil to water cooler. Pictures below are pretty well self explanatory, hint: old cooler is the oily one. I sawed the old cooler in half to have a look inside, was expecting some sort of corrosion or maybe some deposits at least on the coolant side. Not too much evident, some brown crud on the aluminum. The coolant passages are the ones with what looks like tiny fins, although it is hard to see with all the swarf and burring made by the saw. I did note some corrosion on the outside of the coolant nipples, can see in first picture. Quite a bit of pitting in the aluminium. Old O-ring was quite brittle, living on borrowed time. Bottom picture is of my Hazet torque wrench, used to tighten nut on threaded nipple that the cooler (and the oil filter) threads on to - torque spec on that nut is 25Nm.
