Matt Pollard's notes: i just finished converting a 1986 syncro westy to a 1.9TD (aaz). I went with the stock diesel conversion and used a syncro diesel fuel tank. That tank allowed me to use the diesel bellhousing and diesel starter. The 1983 diesel bellhousing bolts right to the syncro transaxle. Not a problem at all. You will also need the diesel flywheel & slave cylinder bracket. The syncro slave cylinder will bolt right to it. I had my tranny rebuilt at the same time and regeared to a .77 4th and a 1.17 3rd. With 195 75 14 tires, you could use a slightly taller 4th, like maybe a 0.70. After 1000 miles i switched to 215 75 15 tires. Ahhh, much better. The conversion was pretty quick once you have all of the parts acquired. Geeze. That took the most time. I wanted minimum down time of my rig, so i spent about a year researching the needed parts and work around, etc. Lots of stuff to be acquired. I had very few suprises along the way because of that. Very few 'hmm, now what' sort of questions. That is good. The power is great, but top end speed sucks. I can go just a tad over 73 mph with my current setup. I don't yet have an intercooler installed as I am not really sure where to put it. Space is really tight back there! I have not really tweaked the engine much as i don't have an egt or oil pressure or temp gauge installed yet. Once they are in place i'll increase the fuel a bit and increase the boost a bit. I am commutting 200 miles with it 2x a week. It runs great. I am getting 25.6 mpg. This is a syncro westy. No, i have not compensated for bigger tires either. Would i do it again? yes. Next time i'd do it the same. I'm pretty happy with the setup. Next i need to 1) gauges 2) intercooler 3) pretty up the wiring 4) powersteering pump (needed new hose. |
