A Quickie in the Snow

One of my goals has always been to use my power wheelchair as a painting tool but the logistics of doing it always kept getting in the way.  Where was I going to get a piece of canvas 6 feet by 20 feet, nail it down so it wouldn`t move when the wheelchair turned, continuously apply paint to the wheels and then be able to clean-up the chair after we were all done.
My Quickie 424 by Sunrise Medical
Then one morning in December 2001, as Evelyn (Amazing) and I were getting into the van the surface of our outdoor parking lot was covered with about ½ an inch of snow.  It was just deep enough so that the wheels of my chair left perfect black tracks in the snow. Since none of the other cars had moved, what I saw before me was a 15ft. by 80ft., unbelievably white, virgin canvas.

My wheelchair was a new mid-wheel drive Quickie 424 that allowed me to turn a complete circle like I was on a turntable.  Therefore I was able to turn complete circles without going over my tracks.  As a result I ended up with a series of connecting circular patterns that were impossible for me to create any other way.  The biggest problem was that before I figured out how to record it, the snow had been driven on and the opportunity never presented itself again until November 2002.

This time we were ready.  The snow wasn`t as pristine and a little too deep but we weren`t going to wait another year.  With Barb`s permission, our neighbor across the hall,  Evelyn stood, camera in hand, on Barb`s eighth floor balcony overlooking the parking lot.  As I created a progressively larger set of patterns, Evelyn shot pictures of every stage of this, appearing onetime only, picture on its nature made canvas.

The resulting photos were then scanned into the computer, advanced, enhanced and romanced into three basic symbols.   "Inputus" representing all the miraculous possibilities that have been continually available to pursue.  "Outputus" representing that which is able to be created as a result of those opportunities and "Opportunitus" representing the potential of pursuing any or all of those opportunities.

Through the magic of hands-free computer technology, a series of my original computer paintings were used as the colored backgrounds for each symbol.  At least three color versions of each symbol were created for each symbol. The individual symbol variations were then combined as a 4 unit mirror image to create the "Inputus 4", "Outputus" 4 and "Opportunitus 4" series.

Gary McPherson, LLD, put me in touch with Dr. Shaun Hains, an Aboriginal Elder. Her interpretations of my artistic gift and the meaning and significance of these symbols as they relate to the Aboriginal culture has also put me back in touch with my own spirituality.

By being able to produce these prints I am again overwhelmed by the power, potential and possibilities of the creative process. This unique means of self expression can provide   an exceptional feeling of accomplishment and inner peace for anyone involved the process.  It definitely has a positive influence on one's feeling of self worth and esteem.

However you view this series, like all works of Art, interpretation and appreciation is always in "The eye of the beholder".  I hope you enjoy.
